25 litre dual grill 900W microwave. Stopped working. Scrap?

No, £<1 ceramic 12a fast blow fuse replaced, all OK. I like it when that sort of thing happens.

Fixing stuff is one of the best hobbies a person could have. I fix things all the time, it not only brings me joy, it also saves me money.

Come on, it's man versus machine.
But yeah, it warrants a single post in the oily gears thread at best.

I do agree that a fuse swap isn't really something to brag about, but it is a start. Thumbs Up

The most common failures of electronic devices I've experienced were just dust build up, corrosion, leaked capacitors and broken power wires/power jacks and worn brushes. All very simple and cheap to fix.

We're talking even about jobs as simple as just cleaning the contacts in the battery compartment of a electronic device to make it run again. Yet, people would just toss it into the bin and buy a new device. That's just idiotic and wasteful. Folded arms

If you really enjoy keeping stuff alive, buy an old motorcycle/car and make that run nice again. Very satisfying, with nice learning curve. Going from the simple stuff to the more complicated things.

My washing machine shit the bed mid wash a few weeks back, blew the main breaker
and plunged my chateaux into darkness.
Next day I decided to pull the fecker apart cos I'm too cheap to buy if I can fix
the motor had a dead short which I initially assumed meant it had burnt out

Nope, stripping down the motor revealed a small self tapper brush screw had dropped out and had shorted a bare winding terminal to the case.
No idea how long it had been loose in there.
I couldn't find any other damage so reassembled it and powered it up

Result!

Cost nowt

I've since realised the slight ticking sound it often made which I assumed was normal has gone.
must have been that damn screw

Well, it wasn't the 13A fuse in the plug, not the RCD, nor the RCBO, nor the company fuse, not the local transformer or the substation. Neither was it the slow-blow 5kV fuse for the magnetron, nor was it the legs on the transistors on some circuit board or other rubbing on the metal of the casing when the door's opened and closed.

So it was good. Lucky, 'cos my knowledge of such things is rather limited. However, I reckon if you went down to your local tip, and picked a clean discarded microwave oven, it would stand a 50-50 chance of being an easy 5-minute fix. What a waste!

Edit: Bragging not intended. Just sayin' about it.

I agree there's probably lotsa stuff with life left in it gone to landfill.waste

this year I've salvagad a 25W Guitar practice amp and scroll saw
whilst mooching about on bin night round here.
got both sorted very easily.

I thought I had a 30" telly and hoped it was the PSU board
but when I powered it up the screen was FUBAR.
Ho Hum, worth a try

I'm a fixer too. I really can't let it lie until I know what's wrong with things sometimes.
Although, I have stopped harvesting old electronics for components as I never end up using them and always need something I haven't got. Except motors. I always keep motors.
