Took 28k mile Striple for MOT. Passed with no advisories.
My old man used to always wash his car before taking it for an MOT. His theory was that an examiner would note the general care paid to a vehicle and be more likely to pass it, or put a borderline fail as an advisory knowing you'd sort it ASAP.
I suspect that this approach was without merit. An examiner will be lenient where they can to keep repeat business, but fail a fail because they don't want any bad comebacks.
Regardless of my views, I always do the same as he did (and have done since 1997). It's partly a nod to my old man I think.
So today I parked a sparkly shiny Striple at work with a fresh MOT......and it pished it down all the way home
Anyway, do you have any superstitions or habits which you know probably don't make much sense but you do anyway?
.........not sure I should be asking BCF about its strange habits |

I had this thing for a while where I used to say what amounted to a little prayer before I went out on the bike.
Something like, "let there be no breakdowns, crashes or need for ambulances today"
I notice that I haven't been doing it for some time ____________________ Chickenystripgeezer's Biking Life (Latest update 19/10/18) Belgium, France, Italy, Austria tour 2016 Picos de Europa, Pyrenees and French Alps tour 2017 Scotland Trip 1, now with BONUS FEATURE edit, 5/10/19, on page 2 Scotland Trip 2 Luxembourg, Black Forest, Switzerland, Vosges Trip 2017

When I used to work on 30 year old rust bucket ships I used to get up in the morning, go down the control room and kiss my hand than tap the makers plaque and say 'Please let nothing break today'.
I do it on my own boat now. ____________________ Triumph Trophy Launch Edition |

I have maybe sat on my bike in the shed, stuck my foot out straight with the bars turned to full lock and pretended I'm Kurt Nicoll or Dave Thorpe, and I'm leading the British GP on a works SR500 or RC500 factory monster.
Ain't admitting to it on an Internet forum though! |

Things have to be ‘right’ before I go out on my bike.
The fish tank light has to be off in the house and I have to double check I’ve locked the front door.
Then onto the bike, I pat the tank and say “C’mom baby we can do it”

^^^Vision-On were killers of children's creations and I will hate them until I die.
Not always but have heard myself saying 'Don't kill me and I won't kill you'.....but that's with an ex.
Nope not superstitious but prefer it when people say 'Ride well' instead of 'Ride carefully'. ____________________ Diabolical homemade music Bandcamp and Soundcloud

It stems from the nautical... but if anyone whistles in a theatre I lose my shit!
I have a daft thing in the car where the stereo volume must be an even number and all my vehicles have to have a "mascot" of some kind - the CBR has an anchor butter monster zip tied to it for example |

Didn't start as a superstition, but it's sort of become one - when I designed my first racing helmet, I chose the colours red, white and black.
Over the years that has expanded to all my kit and now, I won't buy any riding gear unless it's available in any combination of those colours.
As for silly habits, I think mine is quite common, but for years I didn't know I was doing it - I leave a leg trailing behind when I pull away from a standstill, as if I'm leaving the start grid of a GP.
Lots of people do it, I still do it on the super scooter, I've never known why racers do it, or why I (and others) do it. ____________________ Things get better with age; I'm close to being magnificent........

The only thing I can think of, with one or both legs, is it maybe helps to lean over the front a bit more, get your weight over the front to stop the front end from coming up on a fast launch? Possibly helping with balance at the same time from a standstill, perhaps just not upsetting the balance so much on the initial pull-away by moving the legs at the critical point. Why people do it on the road when pulling away normally might be another matter though - does it look "cool"? (I don't know, I'm not qualified to judge these things )

My mate used to have a CG125 as his first bike, so I got one too just to fuck about on and commute to an evening job and night school class.
We used to filter to the front of 40mph dual carriageway traffic lights and do full on drag racing starts, head down legs dragging at back. His Brazilian CG used to beat mine every time with its wild south American horses.
I never had the balls to do full race launches on anything bigger, best get my coat. |
