Ok So now we know what fitting it is... Ive just realised its not so simple finding a bulb. See the real issue Im coming across is life span...

My bike uses the right bulb as the always on running light, and looking online and seeing that bulbs are around 200-400h life spans for the osram and philips lights is making me question what to get.

See the thing is I live out in the countryside, there isnt really any street lighting anywhere so having a good performance bulb is important... And were coming to the darker months now and simple put , the halogens in my bike right now are fucking utter shite.

The legality of LED bulbs is still up in the air...

So what should I go with?

Any recommendations?

Quote:
Hi again,
So MOT is coming soon and while I'm going over the bike to make sure its pass worthy, I was thinking about the headlights... Basically theyre far too dark and I will be getting some brighter ones.

Anyway im struggling to identify the light fitting on the bike...

Googling says theyre H4, but the ones that are fitted are not H4, The metal shim has only 1 notch instead of the 3 on the H4 Also the shim is smaller.

Am I wrong? Is this still a H4 fitting? Will the larger 3 pointed H4 fit in the socket?

If not any idea what this really is?

I Googled it, and it said H7 not H4.

That bulb certainly looks more like an H7.

Ahhhhhhh right see what you mean. The base fitting is like an adaptor.... just realised mine pulled off and low and behold the h7 small contacts....

Thanks Very Happy I can also tell my brother to check his bulbs... hes going to be relieved as he was having the same issue as me...

Yeah it pulls out, i should have noticed but it was so tight in there i honestly thought it was one unit... And brother was having the same issue... And he was telling me of stories of hes seem people just bend the contacts to make it fit....... which threw me right off...

So yeah H7 it is... Thanks all

Now get some Nightbreakers in there. That's what I'm using in all my motors except the Swift which has Xenons.
Should see an improvement in light spread and distance of view. Yeah, they tend to blow sooner than "normal" bulbs,
but since the proper H7 bulbs for motorcycles are sold as being 'vibration resistant' they command a premium
price too. Was one of my first mods to both the Spacker and my ER6F before it.

£16.55 the pair

-Optimum light for more reaction time

-Patented blue ring coating for less reflected glare

-More efficient light production thanks to optimized inert filling gas formula

-Higher resilience due to robust coil design

I had considered them but 200 hours usage is nothing... Esp when one of the bulbs are the running light on the bike :/

That's a minimum. Admittedly I'm not a big miles rider but haven't replaced a blown one yet in any of my
vehicles I've had them in. Anecdote maybe, but quite true in my case none the less. I have them in the van too.

If it's lifespan you're after But you'll get no increased performance. At the end of the day to be brighter the filament must burn hotter,
only way to do that is to make it thinner therefore more fragile and prone to breaking. If superbright halogen bulbs that didn't
blow more often were a thing then I can't imagine any other kind needing to exist anymore.

Or there's these which are a middle ground between either extreme. Slight performance increase but increased durability
Best compromise you'll get I reckon without iffy HID conversion.

So still looking for bulbs, and i started to look at the LED bulbs again...

And OMFG LOL *SPITS COFFEE OUT* WTF!

So looking on ebay decided to see whats going these days for LED headlight bulbs... and the specs, Oh wow those specs.... I know many of us smart folk can see through it all but DAMN. Why does Ebay let sellers get away with the UTTER fucking SHITE, the sellers say about the bulbs!

The level of bullshit is painful to the nose. Specs like 20k LM at TWO HUNDRED WATTS!!!!111!!1!11

Seriously WTF... Can cars even comfortably dish out 200w of power per bulb?

but lets not get too carried away with that watt rating, because lets look at that 20000 LM..... Well no dont, dont look at 20000LM youll go blind rather quickly.

Lets get some comparisons (im not going to search right now for exact figures but the roughs are close enough)

A good quality Xenon Lense headlamp takes roughly 55w of power. These dish out somewhere between 2-4 thousand LM at high beam. Roughly.... As you know this is damn good light, doesnt get much better.

Thats 55w, In a xenon gas filament bulb... LEDs are meant to be more efficient so realistically 55w LED bulb will produce more light.

A good quality Cree COB used in realistically specced flash lights give off around 1000 LM, and use up roughly 10-15W on the lower voltage of 3.7.

So when I see insane figures like 20000LM and 120w or 200w power draws I cry.... heck EVEN if theyre 200W leds and some how survive running... They would melt the reflector right out of any headlight.

it pisses me off that this goes on all the time and shops and places like EBAY do nothing to curb it. These specs arnt even realistically over stated... They are RIGHT out of the ballpark fucking crazy...

Its annoying though because I wouldnt mind trying LED bulbs again. But I want to check out real specs so i know they wont catch fire the moment i turn them on and they wont draw too much power off the bike.

I couldnt help myself I had to double check with some real specs

https://uk.farnell.com/cree/mkrawt-02-0000-0d00j20e1/led-hb-xlamp-mk-r-cool-white-1040lm/dp/2458470

This is a real cree cob of acound 1000 lm... Found in the high end good quality LED flash lights draws like I guessed 15w...

And here is the brightest largest cob on farnell
https://uk.farnell.com/cree/cma3090-0000-000q0h0a40g/led-array-cob-neutral-wht-12372lm/dp/2816594
Its just over 12k LM its 3Cm wide and draws 174w.

I've had quite a few bulbs from from classiccarleds.co.uk

I've emailed them with technical questions about running them on AC power before and got answers that gave every impression they know what they are doing.

Most likely shit adjustment by the user. Assuming it is this, www.ebay.co.uk/itm/283138090247

H7's like this are ideal as you get a dedicated reflector without any need for dual beam shielding, or wasting light to prevent glare. 100% of the light can be focused for low beam.

If bulbs are blowing, look at your headlight mountings and add some rubber somewhere to remove vibration.
