Interested in this subject. I now have one missing halfway along at the top. My dentist quoted me £3,000 for an implant. Another dentist estimated between £1,800 and £2,200 depending on whether bone needs to be grafted to the jaw. A friend of a friend who works for a dentist said I should be able to get it done for £500 spread over two visits by an NHS dentist.
Any ideas folks? ____________________ Now - Speed Triple, old ratty GS550, GSXR750M

One missing...
You may not be able to have implants. Not everybody can.
I'm 7 short of a full set. Mostly molars. Have a couple of bridges, a crown (which is due replacement) and 4 gaps
that can't be filled. Implants wont work for me. My nasal cavities are double normal size. This has inhibited bone growth
so much so that the roots of my top teeth go right through my upper jaw and literally into my snot bags. Which is believed
to have been the cause of their premature loss via infection.
My lower jaw suffers no such problem with regard to bone structure and is prominent and sturdy. But
being honest, I've lost my bottom jaw teeth mainly due to neglect and a feverish, fear driven avoidance of the dentist
for over 25 years. It took a dear friend to almost die from endocarditis caused by a manky tooth and needing two
replacement heart valves to give me the kick up the arse I needed and get me to man up and get back in the chair.
That was about three years ago. When they lifted the bonnet so to speak for the first time in by now, the best part
of 30 years they were amazed that I had been walking round with all manner of tooth root fragments still lodged into
my jaw, they all had to be painfully dug out.

I currently still only have 2 teeth that meet to chew with. They are on my RH side and I am under the dental hospital in
town having a course of restorative procedures and descaling and stuff. The under gum scaling can fuck right off.
Don't like that at all. The front crown is next for attention, it went in when I was about 14 and is long overdue for a
change. Not least because it's teenager sized, not adult sized and what with gums receding over the years it looks odd.
They may have to put a plate in if we can't get it off without breaking the tooth it's attached to so here's hoping they can
dremel it off nicely. I've broken three bridges since I've been sorting the gnashers out.
1. crispy roast potato.
2. Dark peanut.
3. crispy chip from the chippy
It sounds worse than it is aesthetically speaking, most of the issues are right at the back, for the most part the front
teeth aren't that bad with the exception of the crown. If it breaks and we go for a full plate at least I'll also get three more back
on my left side and replace the bridge on the right. I'll be able to chew on that side of my mouth for the first time in donkeys.
I have considered having the lot pulled and going 100% dentures. Ain't gonna lie. ____________________ Currently enjoying products from Ford, Mazda and Yamaha

Despite all the ribbing that Fazertard was given about his bridge/denture, its an option worth considering. But I'd not advise going 100% right from the start.
I had a similar situation to you in that I had literally no "grinding surfaces" at the back.
But mine have been taken out here and there, broken pieces over the years, until suddenly a couple of roots had to come out, and I realised I had hardly any molars left.
I found I was quite literally swallowing food whole without chewing it, and sometimes nearly choking myself.
I ended up (very reluctant at first) with a bottom half-denture held in place by the front ones that seem to still be quite hardy. It takes a week or so to get used to moving your mouth differently to eat. Some use glue, I haven't bothered. Its alright, actually.
Shortly after I got used to the bottom one, I lost a front crown at the top, the tooth holding it in place was cracked, so had to come out. Cue one trip to Guys Hospital Dental Department (amazing views, on the 30-summat floor, right next to the Shard, no G&T but the same great view, LOL)
So my top plate is quite small and until last week there was only one on there, but last week another front crown broke (a Flake 99 of all damn things, the Flake poked me in the tooth when I went for the ice cream ). My very expensive Fulham dentist suggested that as there was no root pathology going on, I could just walk into a dental technicians and ask them to make me a new tooth (£35) (cash ) to sit over the remains of the missing one.
If I take out the top "plate", I tend to look like Nosferatu ... Luckily its kept snugly in place by the remaining front crowns/last of the natural top teeth.
I wouldn't have them all out at once, if I were you. I'd advise getting yourself used to the feel of a partial denture (yes, exactly like Fazertard's) - top or bottom, it makes no difference, and there is no shame in it, and who's gonna know unless you tell them?
Well, okay, other denture wearers might know, cos they will recognise that slight speech impediment but in general ... nobody can tell I have this many teeth that aren't my own originals. I've just got to remember to articulate better, else people think I'm drunk and slurring my words
And I still have a smile (of sorts) that I feel comfortable showing. ____________________ Not nearly as interesting in real life. |

The person who (unwittingly) motivated me to deal with it was Dr Suzy Lishman.
Suzy was (until last year) the President of the Royal College of Pathologists, where I am a lay member on one or two of their sub-committees.
She is a remarkable lady.
When I first met her, I realised she had this Sean Connery thing going on with the "ssh sshh" occasional speech impediment. I quickly realised that she was struggling with what was likely to be a cumbersome set of new dentures.
But during her 3-year presidency, Suzy spent every single day lecturing, meeting people, travelling, and generally promoting the College from one end of the country (in fact, probably the world) to the other. And she's done a fantastic job. As well as trying to hold down her "day job" at Peterborough Hospital - she is one of the most inspirational people I have ever met, with or without her own gnashers.
So I figured ... if she can hold down that job/those jobs all at once, and make a bloody good job of it, then I can cope with my little bit of discomfort about getting used to them.
I saw her just last week, she's still got a little bit of the speech impediment but its much less now, and she still lectures, travels, chairs meetings, and looks and sounds great. ____________________ Not nearly as interesting in real life. |

Yeah at the surgery I'm with in Fulham, where I've been going for over 30 years on the NHS, the new owner is looking far too sleek for me to afford his implants even on a smile-now-pay-later basis.
But he's got a good practice, runs it well and has a perfect chairside manner: gentle, charming and kind: if I could afford him off the NHS, I probably would.
I am anxious about keeping the fronts in reasonable condition, because my smile has always been part of "who I am", so it matters a lot that there aren't glaring gaps. I've acquired a gap in the middle of the front two by virtue of everything moving around a bit, but its not a missing-tooth sort of gap. I couldn't bear that, and I wouldn't be "myself" until it was fixed. I'd have to find the money ...
It was just that the backs went first, and I didn't want to keep choking myself with unchewed food so I went with the half-denture thing. Its worked out okay, so far. ____________________ Not nearly as interesting in real life. |

Well I went for a consultation with my old Dentist as she now runs a private clinic that does cosmetic stuff, and I know and trust her well!
Before I had the tooth removed (which was healthy, before an old twat of a consultant told me it wasnt my wisdom tooth, it was this molar giving me trouble, Ive since had the offending wisdom tooth out) I had to have one of the roots cut off,(apicectomy). It turns out when they did this, they removed all the root buckle from my jaw, so I now need a bone graft too.
Its cost me £130 so far for the consultancy and a CT scan, and over the next 6 odd months it will add up to the grand total of £3100!
Ive been advised if I dont have the bone graft I will end up losing the back molar too and was offered the option of a bridge, so I have decided to bit the peanut and crack on with the implant.
As Its payable in stages its doable for me, and I like the idea of something that will be long term. |

Growing up in the East End of Glasgow I got very little nutrition as a kid and as a result my teeth suffered from a very young age (and there were kids as my school that had worse teeth than me).
I had root treatment on my front 2 teeth when I was 12 (1 nerve was still alive which stung a lot), by the time I was 15 I had 5 crowns at the front and most of my back teeth had been filled.
My wisdom teeth started poking through when I was about 19 and because I was still at the dentist more than I was at home, they were removed because they were rotting before they even fully broke through the gum.
By the time I was 20 I'd lost the 5 crowns as I was at the dentist almost daily to have them refitted, so just had 5 stumps at the front... several of my back teeth were constantly breaking, so the dentist decided to start removing the worst ones.... when 1 was removed from 1 side I'd start eating on the other side, which caused problems for that side and that cycle repeated for a couple of years.
When I was 23 the dentist decided to fit me for a top plate denture to replace 8 teeth.... by this point my mouth was a mess.
Over the next few years I had lots of issues with my remaining teeth, including root treatment that left me looking like the elephant man, severe toothache that kept me awake for 11 days and by the time I found a dentist that would remove the tooth the novocaine numbed everywhere else on my face.... apart from the tooth, but I was in such a state, the few seconds of pain were worth it (I almost fell asleep on the chair when the tooth was removed).
I went back to the same dentist a couple of months later after a couple of days of toothache and got this scrawny little woman dentist to remove a tooth.... I thought it was great at first because I spent about 10 minutes with her boobs stuck to my forehead as she tried to get the leverage to remove the tooth..... unfortunately she had spent so long jiggling the tooth the blood had already clotted so I ended up with a dry socket (which anyone that's had it will confirm it's one of the worst pains ever), that lasted for 6 weeks and no pain killers would touch it.
Now at the age of 45 I have 6 teeth left and they are all lower middle teeth, I have no teeth to chew (for the past 15-16 years I've perfected using the top dentures and bottom teeth to smash food against each other (rather than up down movement to chew, it's more back and forward).
I'd love to have implants, I'd be willing to go through the months of reconstructive surgery to build the bone up (I've even thought of several several designs for plates for weak bones etc)..... but I've lived with the same set of dentures for over 22 years (they've had 4 additions in that time too).
I should point out that I brushed my teeth regularly as a kid, I gave up when I was around 30, and now brush my remaining teeth maybe once a month and the 6 remaining ones still look healthy |

As suggested by others, get it done in another country. I have only ever had 2 fillings as a kid, but as I generally live in the Philippines, I know it is very very affordable there. The standards are high and all can be done so quickly, not like the horror stories of the UK. So, book yourself a trip to the sun, find a dentist and chill for a short time. |
