I learned to drive with the "Stanley Oaks School of Driving", a one-man operation with a 1L Nissan Micra and a big sign on top. The car had done over 250,000 miles and still looked good. It had apparently had to have "a new gearbox", though. First lesson, I got a brief chat, an intro to "how a car works", involving a description of the clutch being "like two dinner plates pressed together" at which I raised an eyebrow, what bits did what, and then we were off! We went up a maze of twisty little estate roads, all alike, and he said "Turn left here". "What!", I cried, dismayed, "that goes onto to the main road!" (a dual carriageway). "Yes," he replied, all smiling and smug, "Let's see how we get on". Chap was bomb-proof. Good fellow too.
You can make learning to drive too complicated, you see. Simple is good. |
