I had one fail on my race TZR250. I sent it off to West Country Windings who refurbed it completely, although they also converted it to total loss, which you wont want or need.
They're very good at this and do a lovely job, but it will set you back, I'd guess around £100-120. I paid that 10 years ago.
It was expensive, but I wanted it to never fail again and second hand 35 year old used ones would have all been as crusty. ____________________ TZR250 2MA road, TZR250 1KT road, TZR250 2MA race, TDR250, YZF-750R Boost colours.

Go for the rewind, as mentioned above.
Got mine done 3 years ago, £65 plus P+P, done at BB Bikeshop.
Well worth it for the peace of mind.
Not sure whether the price is dependent on them having an alternator to exchange though. ____________________ "Everybody needs money, that's why they call it money!" |

I would not replace early, and if I did, a good (unstained) used one would be preferable to a UK rewind, even at the same cost. |
Why? My rewound one was a better and neater job than Yamaha did originally. I know that stator will never fail again. A second hand 35 year old one can't offer the same likeliness.
They do fail on ageing 2 strokes. It's actually fairly common. That's why firms like West Country Windings exist. ____________________ TZR250 2MA road, TZR250 1KT road, TZR250 2MA race, TDR250, YZF-750R Boost colours.

Who takes a 35 year old bike to a tuner????????????????? |
Just about every 2 stroke race bike owner from the Yamaha Past Masters to classic racers.
What is it you think Stan Stephens, Graham File, Taymar, Bob Farnham, Mick Abbey and the rest do for a living? ____________________ TZR250 2MA road, TZR250 1KT road, TZR250 2MA race, TDR250, YZF-750R Boost colours.

You might find yourself selling them on years from now when/if you sell the bike, you might have to use them next week who knows? |
There is no gasket on the flywheel cover.
Maybe, just maybe the OP is trying to put the bike back together and make it reliable? All it takes in an old 2 stroke is the sort of preventative care on 35 year old components, which we’re talking about here.
2 strokes aren’t unreliable, it’s crack handed owners who never did preventative maintenance, who earned them the reputation. ____________________ TZR250 2MA road, TZR250 1KT road, TZR250 2MA race, TDR250, YZF-750R Boost colours.

Preventative maintenance would be changing your piston ring before it wears out, or changing the reeds before they break/ deform not changing a perfectly good ignition stator.
So long as the bike runs and the stator resistance is within spec there is no reason to change it.
If the op wants piece of mind for changing it then so be it, just don't throw the old one away in case the new part fails early (not unheard of). |
A 35 year old stator is a lot more likely to fail than you seem to realise. Having run 35 year old 2 strokes in a race series for 5 years, along with 30 other people I considered friends, you soon get to realise which parts start to fail unexpectedly.
I never had a mechanical DNF due to engine/pistons/seizure as I changed the pistons/rings/small end/base gaskets twice a season. I did have a mechanical DNF due to a stator breaking down though and with the cost of club racing, didn't want to see this fault again.
£100 well spent in my eyes. That stator, will now be OK for another 30 years. There are many parts I wouldn't change just due to age, but the stator is not one. It suffers a lot of heat cycles and will fail at some stage. If it's reached over 30 years of abuse, it will be any time soon. ____________________ TZR250 2MA road, TZR250 1KT road, TZR250 2MA race, TDR250, YZF-750R Boost colours.
