for cars I find a simple (cheap) alarm with one of those steering locks that cover the whole wheel and move independant from the wheel, delocked doors and plenty of kill switches hidden in the car are the best things. What about bikes?

anyone ever thought about or has made a cut off switch for their bike? I've done it on cars many times and you hide the switch somewhere or build it into something like the heater knob (if you don't use the heaters that is)

what would be a good idea to hook up an isolation switch too? something you can flick off when you leave the bike. With cars it's things like the fuel pump, alternator, coil, starter etc

anything to make it that bit harder or make them take that much longer to steal the bike can't be a bad thing?

Attaching it TO something.

All the secret switches in the world don't help when there's 4 men, 2 scaffolding poles and a transit van.

My mutant Alsatian lives with my bike. Can't wait for some twat to try and nick it coz he's very cleaver. He once caught a burglar but instead of barking as soon as he heard the sod he lay silent until the bastid had actually got through the window then ripped feck out of him. There was blood everywhere by the time I got up but no burglar. So he either scarpered or Zak ate him Very Happy

If you are going to put in a cutout switch, wire it so it connects the feed to the coil from the CDI to earth. The switch is 'ON' to prevent someone starting it. From past experience, you will forget you have it and have half the bike in bits before you remember, I have seen this done on several occasions.

Best thing is a big f-off chain and attach it to something solid by the frame. If you get a good chain, it cannot be cut with bolt cutters (my 16t SWL grade 80 load chain laughs at bolt cutters). They could always turn up with hydraulic cutters, a gas-axe or a stillsaw, frankly, if they do this nothing will stop them taking your bike.

Big f off chain is only good if its got a top notch padlock. Don't know if the better padlocks are more resilient to the "freeze it and smash it apart" method used. Confused

I have a reinforced, insulated steel cable that wraps around the foot pegs, through the frame, through the rear wheel and attaches to the shed with a yale heavy duty padlock. The bike is also alarmed and steering locked. This is the MZ, the ped gets a lock and chain from Jokes 'R' Us, as you could pick it up and walk off with it if needs be.

Nice and out of the way so they can sit and busily hacksaw through your security devices where noone can see them. Or if they can't be arsed, just dismantle any parts they think would be easily sold (eg plastics, clocks, wheels) and take them away. It happened to someone on this forum!

Problem with chains as said kindof above is that the weakest link is the lock so you have to get a really top notch lock as well.

Scratched paint work tends to work quite, lots of mud and dirt work a treat.

Now I have the VFR I want to keep, I am paranoid all the time as I have had 3 bikes stolen in 5 years.
Don’t buy locks and shit from bike shops as they charge you for the name, go to a hardware store or something.
I got a tough metal plate thing that you bolt to the wall It cost me £12 from Wickes, in the bike shop it was yellow with a name and cost £24.99!!
Get a good £20-30 disc lock (maybe to go under the seat)
I also carry with me a chain with a lock that can’t be done over by a bolt cutter in my rucksack.
Apparently if you have a ‘Abus’ lock of some sort you can get a percentage off of your insurance as they are almost impossible to get with out power tools.

I there anyway you could put it in your bike or attach it to the grab rail or something? A chain and lock in the backpack might do your back or internal organs some serious damage in an off.
