So this little 4 legged tank was found wandering the streets of Bristol, we are looking after him for a couple of weeks.
If he isn't claimed I think we will end up keeping him.
He's a funny little fucker!
Do any of you lot have a tortoise? Any tips? ____________________ Quietly and consistently taking the piss.

I found a tortoise slowly wandering the streets in Glasgow once (someone had etched a deep T in to his shell), I took him (or her) home and everything went well for a few months until hibernation time....
My all knowing parents said it needed to hibernate, so they put a box in the boiler cupboard..... with some nice snuggly blankets.... and I was told to put a whole lettuce leaf in the box with him (her).
Being an impatient 12 year old, I checked the box 2 weeks after and found 1 very dead tortoise
That was my first ever pet
anyway, on topic.... that's one angry looking tortoise |

It's good that you're taking it to the vet, as you/Mr Bastard said. The vet will give you more advice; ask especially about "healthy weight" and hibernation. If its weight is too low, it will not survive hibernation, so you won't be able to hibernate it (it's getting late for hibernation preparation now). It you are not hibernating it (in an unheated place outside ideally around 5C) not subject to temperature fluctuations, freeezing or vermin attack (e.g. rats/mice), you will have to keep it warm all winter and feed it! There's no real need to feed it special tortoise food, they like (need) a very wide variety of all sorts of vegetables and may even take a morsel of raw mince or sliver of raw meat from time to time. There's plenty of advice on t'internet now. Give it (now!) as much food as it wants (remove unappetising old food though), see: https://www.tortoisecentre.co.uk/Tortoise%20Diet.aspx for quick reference.
Can you post a picture of its plastron ("basal plate", or "underneath")?
Edit: I'm jealous, BTW. The family had one a while ago, but it was stolen, or escaped. They're a bit more interesting than you might think. If they do escape, remember "the tortoise and the hare"! The one we had could swim reasonably well in still water. My grandfather had about a dozen ancient ones all stumping about in his big garden!

My gran had a tortoise,
Only living thing my grandad never fell out with.
Lived in the garden / garage under a large cage which got moved daily to ensure grass was clean and lush for him.
his hutch always had dried leaves in (more put in towards winter ready for him to choose to hibernate)
hutch was taken into the garage each night and a blanket put over, more than one blanket in winter
lived on a diet of cauliflower, cabbage and dandylion leaves, also liked buttercups with the stalks removed.
vet will advise better than I can though - seem to remember eyes need washing when they wake from hibernation. ____________________ Looking to pass your CBT / Bike tests in Bury Lancashire? try www.focusridertraining.co.uk Would recommend.

Update time.
Picked up a nice viv from gumtree for £70 with all the bits.
https://i.imgur.com/bmYdazu.jpg?1
He has put on 102g since we got him, the only time he seems to stop eating is to sleep.
https://i.imgur.com/2CxZkQH.jpg?1
He loves basking under his lamp.

I have to admit he is a proper caracter. When he is out and about he stomps around exploring everything. The dog is even scared of him! ____________________ Quietly and consistently taking the piss.

My mum has about 6 tortoises of different sizes. A couple of them are huge. She's had them since I was living there.
They seem very happy, she has 3 tanks for them in a stack with sliding glass doors on the front to get at them. Fred, the
smallest and the one she's had the longest is proper aggro and has to have a section of his tank sectioned off from the
other tortoise in there or he goes for it. Immediately!! Same if he's put with the others and some are 5x his size. He's a
grumpy old bastard, of that there's no doubt. ____________________ Currently enjoying products from Ford, Mazda and Yamaha
