Quick question: Does fork oil go 'bad' ??
Is fork oil like brake fluid and thus need renewing every few years?

Not as far as I know, but in use it does become contaminated (water/rust/bits of metal&plastic) and I assume its viscosity changes.

Yes it does. It goes thin and starts to smell once the oil starts to break down. Replacing it (especially with decent quality fork oil) should give you a noticeable difference.

The stuff that factories put in there is dirt cheap and rubbish, but a quality make of the correct weight should be better than OEM and last longer.

Lol. And there's me trying to think of fork handles jokes..

OK cheers everyone. I'd suspected it and for a cheap enough price it's worth it.

I changed the fork oil a couple of times within weeks because of a leak and the low-mileage oil stank even then.

Did you completely wash all parts and flush the sludge out of the bottom?

They were well drained and I might have chucked a small amount of fresh oil through them too, I can't remember. But yeah, could be residual old stuff.

I've left forks upside down overnight and then pumped them a load again and a little bit of really REALLY stinky oil still comes out. Last time I did forks I disassembled them completely and washed all the parts in brake cleaner...
