I have an old Spong mincer. It has a "rubber" suction cup base. The rubber has perished and cracked. Any ideas about a replacement I could adapt to fit, or a mouldable material I could use to make a new one?

Edit: It's flat, not domed at all, and about 1/4" thick. The lug is joined to a large flat "washer" about 2 1/2" in diameter embedded in the rubber, which is about 4" in diameter.

I've had a look at that and it's too domed. Plus I don't know how I'd attach the lug/washer (which is presumably there to increase the vacuum). It's one o' these:

Edit: Me ol' mum used to use it to mince the leg of lamb leftovers on Sunday, with onions & carrots & things, for Shepherd's pie on Monday or Tuesday. They're very good mincers. It's got some silly sort of sentimental value, I s'pose.

Yes, that's the jobbie. After over 50 years, the "rubber" has gone all funny.

I'm tending towards a plaster-of-paris mould and some RTV silicone, but that's possibly rather too soft & floppy.

Can't help directly but take a long look through Ebay. I was looking to make moulds and cast resin body part shapes. I found that there are some specialist suppliers of resins of any type on that site - there must be similar silicone/rubber suppliers.

^^ I did that to see who was awake!

(But technically it's true that a monger from Teesside has a casting of my dick made from top quality resin that's easily cleaned, keeps a sterile finish and casts a good smooth finish.)

She can keep it - definitely not getting the real thing now!

For casting body parts I used something called Alginate. Basically like soft rubber once set and can be torn away from the form. It will make a good mould for the rubber sucker thingy once you've sourced a suitable material.

Here you go!
This is the shop of a specialist chemical supplier - I reckon one of the polyurethane compounds would work. Message the seller and ask because they seem to have an inexhaustible combination of products.
If it's any help - polyurethane is often used for the tyres of bandsaw wheels to grip the metal saw blade. Might be worth a try??

I'm all for repair and re-use but what about replacing it with the 'G-clamp' version (plenty on ebay) or even converting that one?

Well. A fair while ago I did weld up a bracket for the mincer, which screws into an M6 captive nut on a short piece of short piece of 2" square tube in turn permanently screwed to the skirt of the kitchen table (just under the table top), which works well, but I'd have to vandalise my kitchen units to use it now.

Perhaps a little over-engineered:

Smile Thanks... I think it was Comma, since I had some lying around (I misguidedly painted a Morris Minor van chassis with it); same thing but cheaper & possibly not the same quality. Those Spong mincers are actually very good things.
