HI all

As you have no doubt worked out from the title of this thread I'm looking at buying a 250 REBEL

One has come up for cheap near me and I'm thinking of grabbing it as a cheap commuter.

Being a fat git (14 stone) I don't expect to break 70mph at all and would say I'm in store for journeys that are really economical and reach about 65mph

Would I be right in assuming the above? Anyone owned one?

Not expecting the world, just after a cheap winter back that will cost me little / nothing and will only bore me most of the time as opposed to all

Any advice welcome

Cheers

How old is it (I assume old)? Factor in if it only did 70ish mph when new, time wouldn't have helped this.

It's a 98 with 34k miles on. Explains why its so cheap I would imagine but looks in good order

No, but Im sure you're in for a long, hard Teffing, complete with history of the Benley derived engine and power = torque x revs. Very Seriouse Business.

I haven't owned a Rebel but I have lived with a CB250 Two Fifty for 7 years which is a very similar bike, same motor and similar weight. You are right in assuming the above and expect 50-55MPH uphill or into a headwind.

They are not fast, I raced mine against a CBR125 with a much bigger bloke on it and we were evenly matched. A YZF-R125 will be faster, a Duke 125 faster still. They are fantastically tough though, the chassis will give in before the motor does.

I had a 250 Rebel for a while. It was actually an Asia/Pacific market CA250 with twin carbs and some cosmetic differences but basically the same as the CMX. A really nice little bike, IMO, although not very quick. 65mph is certainly possible - I think I once had 120kmh/75mph on the clock of mine but you wouldn't be able to cruise at that speed. Being a 360 degree twin, at higher speeds there is some vibration. Fuel economy is good, from memory it did about 70mpg.

Your weight does lead me to wonder how tall you are. The Rebel is a small bike with a very low seat. I'm pretty small and have very short legs, so the bike was OK for me size-wise, but if you're much over 6' I imagine it would be a bit of a squeeze.

All in all they're a really nice little bike if you want to just potter around at lowish speeds. I wouldn't mind another at some point but good ones go for quite strong money.
