Well Giffgaff really but they use O2 just like Tesco. Tesco sales person says it would not work, I differ. Opinions please?

No, Tesco are a bugger, I had a Tesco phone that would not accept an 02 sim, yes same network and yes it would work the other way around, Tesco/Giff Gaff in O2 phone.

Tesco seems to lock their phones so Tesco only.

It may be possible to unlock your phone though, depending on the model.
Although...if you've had your phone more than 12 months Tesco will unlock it for free according to Ofcom.
