Current car gets an average of 30 to the gallon, I thought this was terrible, but you've all cheered me up.

Previous 200tdi land rover 90 would do 20-25mpg.

What's wrong with the SV for it to return such a low figure?

Nothing, i've had two and both have been that MPG. I do like to use the full rev range whenever possible Very Happy

I wonder how much of that was down to the power sapping 4wd layout? I don't know what spec your Norris Lancer was, but big turbos don't make any boost round town and I heard that alot of the WRC replicas used Lean fueling low down to help earlier turbo spool up?

I'm quite sick of the current thinking that you can't have a really fast hatchback or saloon without boost, young people think it's the holy grail. The thinking many have is build a sensible compression engine like a safe and throw in 2bar to make power.

I don't like this approach, and think turbo or supercharging should be the icing on the cake to a very well developed and tuned NASP engine. If forced induction is adding more than 50% extra power to an engine, then it's doing it wrong IMO.

Nothing worse than a crap basic engine design like a Renault 5 with a ton of unreliable boost pressure forced into it. I know thats a bit simplistic but huge boost or go home is a load of bollocks to me.

Once you've experienced anti-lag you'll never say another bad word about turbos Very Happy

My Ford Explorer averages 17mpg, and I'm not exactly a spirited driver. Makes me wonder what a full size American SUV does compared to my 'compact' Explorer.

About the same, if not better! How old is yours? The next size up, latest model Expedition, returns between 17 and 24 mpg (US gallons, 20-28 mpg UK).
Stupidly large gas guzzlng V8's are not the go to engines anymore, Ford are going over to V6's tricked up to return better torques than your bog standard V8.

My '86 F350 crew cab dually with the 460 CobraJet did 6mpg. Luckily it held 60 gal so I didn't need to gas up every day.

Not too bad in reality.. 350 Buick V8 With a lockup torque converter on a crappy THM200 transmission. But I can at least get 1:1 ratio at 40mph and above.

Which is about the same mileage as the Leyland Daf 7 1/2 tonner with the turbo Cummins that I used to plod round in, most people don't use those or the 350's as their go to day to day transport though!

Worst was an ‘84 2.8i Granada Ghia, it was well past it’s best and on a good day did 12-13mpg, still loved it though.

Second would be a Grand Cherokee 4.7 that did 17mpg but I don’t think that’s bad for a big V8 in something that weighs only slightly less than the titanic.
