If you don't even have the green slip it's a right pain, as the DVLA have to write to the previous registered keeper, and you have to wait until they've waited the pre-requisite number of weeks before it can be registered in your name.

If you have the green new keepers slip it's not too bad.

You also have to be 100% sure that the car/bike is legit, because if they write to the existing keeper and he writes back saying "Oh, you found my stolen bike!" you might be in a lot of trouble. You can be done for receiving stolen goods even if you didn't know it was stolen.

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

But a V5 is NOT proof of ownership so why does it matter so much, you can easily apply for a new one. (devils advocate here as I wouldn't buy a bike without the V5 myself)

Definitley do all you can to establish the bike is not stolen or written off, they stopped issuing V5s for Cat A and B write offs, just think of reasons why the seller would not have the V5 and try to discount all the Shady ones.

If it were me I'd not part with good money if there was a sniff of doubt about the bikes history.

No log book= pain in the arse.
Do you smell a rat?, chances are you do or you wouldn’t have come here seeking advice, possibly/maybe/I think.

Personally I won’t go near a bike without it having the correct document.

Maybe get some identification from the owner and a sneaky picture of them and the location you buy the bike from, just in case things go wrong and the police end up getting involved.

I've noticed some people using fake names on Gumtree and I don't understood why, their name's on the v5c Confused

It's the question of why haven't they applied for a new one.

Is the V5 in their name and they've lost it? Did they buy it without a V5 and are hoping that it's all okay?

You can have as many photos of the seller as you want but if the bike belongs to someone else then you'll be left with no bike and no money.

True and maybe you’ll never get your money back or ever see the bike again.
However at least you had something to give to the cops.
They might possibly, maybe, hopefully be able to use that evidence to catch a scrote.
At least you tried.

Making someone uncomfortable is a crime.

Hi
Done if before, but wouldn't recommend it.
All I can do is ask to see ID of seller ( photo on my fone).
Do my homework on seller 😉 & get them to sign my pre-prepared bill of sale.
That's about it, unless they have the little V5C new keepers part of V5, even an old one, just for the long ref no. It helps, a lot.

Good Luck.

cheers,
GAZ

Even if it was, which it isn't, that's not the same as taking someone's photo.
