I doubt you'll have to try that hard to be on your own.

I've basically Xmasblocked this year, I convinced my family there was no point us getting gifts for each other and said I'd only get presents for the younger members.

We haven't had decorations for a few years, and last year didn't even 'celebrate' Christmas on Christmas day which was the last straw for me.

I can take one designated shitty day, I can't take that day being in flux or even worse having multiple shitty days.

Bah humbug!

My youngest daughter and boyfriend have invited me and her Mum onto their boat for Christmas dinner.

The slight elephant in the custard bowl is her oven is too small for the Turkey so she has asked me to bring my boat down 16 miles from my marina to their boat in Leighton Buzzard so they can use my oven to cook it. Oh, and I have a bigger table so we can eat on mine as well. Thinking

I said to wifie, why don't we just eat on my boat in the Marina?

Don't you dare suggest that - they are having their first Christmas on board and want to invite us to theirs for it so we are going there.

Does anyone else see any sort of warped logic in there? Doh!

I see the logic. There comes a time in a young person's life where they host Christmas rather than a parent. It is a rite of passage for the youngster, and the top of a downward slope to senility and death for the parent.

Alternatively one can look on the bright side and enjoy the transition in the knowledge that you won't be asked to do Christmas again. You can put your feet up, have a drink and fall asleep to whatever shite is on the telly in the afternoon. Earned, I'd say!

True, and you are correct about the 'rite of passage' thing. I was just looking at it logically.

Spock would not be amused. Wink

I've not been home since September, going home in 3 days. With three little children 7,5,and 3 I cant wait. Before the children came along, I really couldn't be bothered and would ride to Portland Bill and sit and watch the waves breaking in on Christmas day. How life changes eh?

Would Spock be amused at taking what 4 hours (?) to do 16 miles Smile Wouldn't it be quicker to run the Turkey back on the bike?

4 hours, I wish. Max speed on the canals is 4mph and you are lucky to average 3 with moored boats. Then there are 8 locks to slow you down more. I would expect double that. 8 hours each way without any hold ups.

Actually, I have just stuck the route in canal planner which is the online sat nav for canals. It's not 16 miles its...

This is a trip of 22 miles, ΒΌ furlongs and 7 locks from Kingfisher Marina to Leighton Buzzard Supermarket Mooring travelling southeast on the Grand Union Canal

This will take 8 hours and 21 minutes which is 1 day, 1 hour and 21 minutes at 7 hours per day

Great fun Laughing

Cook the turkey and take the cold cuts with you for reheating. Chuck the table in the boot.

Yes it would, but I have a well stocked bar on the boat and in 8 hours I can get comfortably pissed knowing the police wont pull me for DD Thumbs Up

Canals are not about getting there, but the journey.

I'm sure there are actual rules about operating machinery whilst drunk and it being an arrestable offence - the arrest being more a persons own safety thing followed by a night in the cells and a drunk and disorderly charge.
The same charge could be thrown at a drunk farmer ploughing his fields using a tractor - even though he doesn't use the public highway he could still be arrested.

Canals: No wonder the railways took over!

There are rules in place, the waterways come under the maritime rules but there is no one to police them. Dance!

As long as you don't injure someone plod isn't interested.

Both of us bringing the boats back from Northampton in the lovely summer. I was the hotel boat as they didn't have a fridge for the beer at the time. Cool

Actually, I was the food boat, the booze boat and the watching TV boat. I'm still not sure how I got roped into it. Laughing

Out of interest how cold are they during the winter? I imagine it's like living on an icecube Smile I remember one cold winter the canalists (is that correct? Smile) were chopping up benches for firewood.
