What do you reckon about this Gatwick story? Seems a bit odd that one person or a small group can bring the country to a stand still with cheap drones, closing an airport for 36 hours. I'm surprised the authorities and military do not have the technology or ability to find and take down, what could have been a couple of £50 toys.
It seemed to flood the news yesterday, taking away any stories over the current shite going on in the government. Is there a possibility it was a news diversion stunt by the authorities? I mean, if it closes the airport for 36 hours, any Islamic militant with a drone with now be on their way to their nearest airport.
All seems a tad hard to believe that in 36 hours, they couldn't find the people responsible. The range on these things cant be that far surely? Do we really not have the ability or technology to remove the threat of a drone FFS? I mean, in 36 hours, they would need several charges or battery changes, so surely shouldn't have been that hard to trace.
If it really is genuine, I find it quite alarming that we have no defence over such an easy threat. ____________________ TZR250 2MA road, TZR250 1KT road, TZR250 2MA race, TDR250, YZF-750R Boost colours.

Apologies if showing ignorance of the situation, but why didn't they ask a local farmer to shoot it down? ____________________ Now - Speed Triple, old ratty GS550, GSXR750M

If they saw it they could shoot it down with shotguns, there were groups of cops walking around with semi-auto shotguns and birdshot on the airfield. The army are also bringing Wifi jammers. Jamming drones long term isn't an option though as you'll have to jam the wifi, keyfob etc of everyone within a mile or 2 of the airport as well. Similarly if they block the 433MHz ISM band that will knock out the emergency services TETRA comms too. As Ste said they don't want to stop the drone, they want to make a public example of the pilot when they catch them to deter others.
More generally the authorities (see "the police management and intel services") don't like the way ordinary people are now able to access what used to be nation state level capabilities like medium range remote aerial surveillence and strike, strong cryptography (AES128, RSA), and secure collective organisation (whatsapp, snapchat etc). Just wait until people use 1kg drones fitted with single shot handguns or some kind of saw. Remote controlled cars like a Focus or something will be far more dangerous than a 1kg drone. It's easily possible for a single person to use 10 remote control used cars as ramming kill vehicles around central London.
Also, it's probably greenies or students on holiday with new drone. Term time ended at uni ended just before this happened.

A big drone costs £1k, snackbars are poor. |

News diversion stunt? I suppose that's possible but you'd think there are easier ways of burying bad news. |
Really? 2 drones, nobody hurt, hardly any effect on the economy, fills every news outler for almost 2 days whilst Brexit goes off the radar.
Seems a very cheap and effective distraction to me.
Ste wrote: | To stand any real chance of finding the culprits, a helicopter needs to be airborne when the drone is sighted at Gatwick. |
If only there was an airport with hundreds of helicopters nearby during the 36 hour period eh?
Ste wrote: | If they shoot it down then there's fuck all chance of catching whoever is to blame. |
And the chances of catching them now it's no longer flying are?
Ste wrote: | There are loads of possible threats that we have no real defence against. Christmas vans of peace for example. |
True, but this affects way more people for such an easy and cheap outlay.
Ste wrote: | I'm wondering why (so far) only Gatwick is being targeted. You could cause bigger disruptions by flying it around Heathrow. It's only about a 40 mile drive from Gatwick to Heathrow so to really wind everyone up, doing both in one day would be easy enough. |
Maybe it was just a ploy to get Brexit out of the news now the MP's have gone on holiday until January? It seems to have worked. The Brexit threads have dropped like a stone on here. ____________________ TZR250 2MA road, TZR250 1KT road, TZR250 2MA race, TDR250, YZF-750R Boost colours.

£1k doesn't buy a very big drone.
The biggest drone from DJI costs ~£5,500 and you can spend many times that on more professional ones.
Jamming it wouldn't help as it'll have a return to base function. |

Brexit hasn't gone off the radar, it's still on the front page off BBC News.

The cost of buying the drone isn't massively expensive in the grand scheme of things but the knock on costs are huge.
mpd72 CPT wrote: | If only there was an airport with hundreds of helicopters nearby during the 36 hour period eh? |
It's the needing to be already in the air that's the problem.
mpd72 CPT wrote: | And the chances of catching them now it's no longer flying are? |
I'm guessing that it'll be back as more disruption will mean they're making their point even more. Plus they'll be having a bit of a giggle about bringing Gatwick to a halt.

Renting a van, stealing a van or whatever costs less than a £5k+ drone.

Brexit isn't out of the news. It's not the top story but it's still on the front page of BBC News and I expect the same on other news sites.
Everyone is getting bored of the Brexit threads on here and that's got nothing to do with the Battle for Gatwick. |

I cant help thinking there is more to this than they are letting on.
There have been various other drones spotted in and around airports with minimal fuss.
It seems odd that such lengths are being taken to shut down.
Then you read this is happening in Germany and things become more suspicious.

No doubt this is a Muslim/Paedo drone transporting young white girls to the homes of all Pakistani men in and around the Gatwick area.
Quick, get Tommy on the case.
If you believe anything else or have ANY thoughts that this might not be related to terrorism or conspiracy then you are supporting the paedophiles you sick fucks. |

Al Beeb have a daily anto Brexit story anyway. I've not heard anything on the radio news for days now.
Ste wrote: | It's the needing to be already in the air that's the problem. |
Bollocks. A Police helicopter could have been in the air well within the 36 hours that Gatwick has been closed.

Unless it really was another drop the dead donkey news distraction.
Ste wrote: | Renting a van, stealing a van or whatever costs less than a £5k+ drone. |
But doesn't involve the suicide of the attacker, nor affect hundreds of thousands of people.
Ste wrote: | Brexit isn't out of the news. It's not the top story but it's still on the front page of BBC News and I expect the same on other news sites. |
It's certainly had the heat taken away from it. Al Beeb's generic project fear story is an absolute waste of airtime...

I don't agree. This news has conveniently kept other Brexit news on the quiet, so people have nothing new to add to the threads. ____________________ TZR250 2MA road, TZR250 1KT road, TZR250 2MA race, TDR250, YZF-750R Boost colours.
