Changes to category A from 31 December 2018:
the minimum engine power requirement for large motorcycles (category A) will increase from 40 Kilowatt (kW) to 50kW
a minimum kerb weight of 180kg will be introduced
Motorcycles affected by this change are shown on the list as A*. You will not be able to use these for the test from 31 December 2018.

Strictly speaking, they aren't actually changing anything. When directive 3 was first proposed the weight requirement was supposed to be 185kg. However, Loads of ATBs didn't actually read that far into the legislation and ran off and bought lightweight 'big bikes', then whined at the DSA that they had spent a fortune on bikes that weren't actually suitable for test. The DSA wangled a 5 year interim period to allow them to replace bikes at their leisure. That 5 years expires at the end of January.

Tara, Don't give up on the big bike idea. Find an instructor who actually teaches you how to ride the bike, rather than one who 'teaches' you what you need to pass the test.
