I don't get it. I wonder why are these so popular, is it purely cosmetic? Why don't the manufacturers fit them if they're so advantageous?

The rearmost part of a bike can't be the tyre, so manufacturers create plastic monstrosities to ensure something is rear of the tyre. Everyone then bins them because they look like aids

Yes they're practical for keeping water and stuff down but with offroad bikes they can be broken easily.

I am interested by that. Can you point to relevant legislation, please?

Think I am one of the few who prefer the standard rear end over a Tail Tidy. Very Happy

I purchased my naked bike with a tail tidy and after a couple of wet weather runs and finding mud over my helmet and pillion seat, I replaced it with the original.

They only look better on Sports bikes IMO.

It might just be that the rearmost part is supposed to have a reflector on or beyond it - and that needs to be held in space somehow.
Luckily it seems to be more at construction stage this is enforced rather than MOTs, but I expect they are working on it.

Seems like a design failure to me. The designers come up with an aesthetic that has a short tail, then later on they have to bodge something on to meet the legislation.

[better without the dumbo ear indicators]

They clean up the rear of any bike.

My MT09 came with an R&G tail tidy, I stuck the original on and flogged the other on eBay. I personally don't see the point either, tarts accessory.

In this case it also left gaps in the undertray, leading to mud under my seat. Pile of wank.

they have to cover x% of the back wheel for homologation purposes, once the design is signed off for sale they can sell you the bike and you can do what you like with it, personally my tail tidied street triple throws a load of crap up the back of my Dainese goretex jacket and I won't be fitting one again on my next bike

What year was the rear most part of a bike last allowed to be the tyre?

Older sports bikes had longer tail sections, so I guess this was never a problem, but what about all the specials and the choppers/bobbers with side mounted number plates and no mudguards?

Also if the tyre can't be the rear most part of the bike, then what's wrong with having a 2-3' long end can with a light and reflector fitted in the end of it? Would look better to have comedy long exhausts than silly plastic extensions tacked to the back of every bike.

I reverted my bike's tail to the old one too, while the tidy looked good I didn't like the road crap getting on my back

They are popular since they look about a 1000 times better then the ugly OEM "rear fender" which are required in most countries by law.

Do not believe it's required by law for customers, only by law to manufacturers.

I thought it was like (loud) exhausts, they only have to sell you the original with the bike, they can come in a box Smile
