Hello. I'm new here - and have a question re: 1954 Hercules 212 with a Sachs M50 98cc engine. Surely, there must be an oil requirement for this engine? I can't find any reference to it, anywhere. The only apparent fill hole atop the engine is a very small hole fitted with an M5 bolt. Is this correct? Any info on oil wt./quanity? Thanks!

It's a two-stroke, isn't it? ICBW...

I would say a 2 stroke engine needing oil with fuel.
Does this bike have a fuel cap with a funnel / tube attached?

Oops sorry I had forgotten that modern people might not remember or know about petroil (fuel-oil mix). Smile

???

Edit: Sorry, looking in the cold clear light of day, that's only a parts manual.

An extremely confusing post!

OK so it's an older bike. A two stroke engine??
If it's a two stroke it'll need separate oil for the gearbox and oil for the actual piston and cylinder. Which oil are you referring to??

Edit: Is this the engine? I ask because there appears to be a modern variant too.

Sister Sledge - sorry if my posting was confusing. Yes, that pretty much appears to be my engine. And everyone - yes, it's a 2 cycle engine. So the gas/oil must be mixed by the rider. What I'm asking about, is the apparent lack of an oil fill hole for the transmission - surely, the 2-speed gearbox has its own oil requirements and reservoir. I just can't seem to find it, on my engine. Nor any information regarding the type of oil/quantity necessary. All I CAN find, is an M5 (possibly M4) bolt atop the gearbox location that reveals an especially small opening. that MIGHT be the oil fill hole - it just seems absurdly tiny. Nonetheless, thanks for all the replies.

Maybe there is an oil level / filler plug at the side of the box like cars.

This reminds me of the time when a mate tried to change his car engine oil.
He managed to drain it but took almost a day to top it up - via the hole for the dipstick..

I had a Puch Maxi (I know - bit shit but some here have them) and I'm sure the gearbox oil was topped up via a hole in the side of the casing somewhere? Might be wrong on that!
Usually if there's a hole on the side (might have another use too) you just top it till it's basically level with the hole - a bit like a lorry diff on an axle.
I actually couldn't see a suitable hole for gearbox oil on the drawing I linked to but it might be on the opposite side and not drawn in??

Actually - I have a Puch Maxi, also...and the "oil fill hole" on the Hercules in question is much smaller the Puch's. I'll see how I can go about posting a picture or two.

Thank you so much for your help. I've ordered the manual from The National Motorcycle Museum. Not meaning to go off topic here, but...can anyone explain exactly how to post a picture here? I've searched for directions - none seem too exist. Please keep in mind -I'm old, digitally challenged, and use a Mac. Do I post the pic on photo bucket or such; copy the url; and then paste that url into parentheses in a reply? Or what, exactly? I'm 100% no good at this...thanks.

You'll want to copy and paste the URL of the image rather than the page.

Then put that URL in between img tags.

Like this: [img]https://photobucket.com/folder/blah/blah/image001.jpg[/img]

Hopefully that makes sense!

Thanks! Here's a go at it...just an overall view of the bike in question. I don't have a closeup picture (yet) of the engine uploaded. Hope this works.

You've used the URL of the page rather than the image itself. Wink

Turns out flickr is a bit of a pain in the arse to get the image URL from but here's how you do it. https://help.flickr.com/en_us/get-the-url-of-a-flickr-photo-S1Hnnmjym

We're getting closer. Mr. Green

That's the file name, you want the whole URL.

Rather than going to "view all sizes", once you've clicked the download icon in the bottom right and it gives you the list of different sizes, if you right click on whichever size it is you want and then just click "copy link address" then you get the URL for the image on your clipboard ready to paste between img tags.

I never realised just how awkward flickr is!! Laughing

I'm not seeing any "Copy link address" possibility. Sorry. I'll keep at it.
