The major issue is not having a controller half the time in game, not sure why if I'm always getting controller support in the UI.

What controller is it?
I have lots of experience with controllers in retropie and have only experienced that with those cheap clone snes pads.
You can change the mapping in retroarch, but that's a pain in the anal passage.

Tried a genuine 360 and Xbox One controller that both did the same thing. When the game launches it says it has detected my controller, but I rarely seem to actually have controls.

I also tried a PS3 pad which wasn't detected properly for some reason (I think they're meant to be supported?), and a PS classic controller which I couldn't configure properly. I do have a SNES mini pad but no adapter to use it.

I've had no problems with Xbox and PS pads, but the PS pad does need the correct bluetooth driver to be installed for them to work.

Sounds like you are in need of a Pi3 Smile

I was trying the PS3 pad via cable, as I've used it on the PC. I realise you kid but I'm glad I've experienced Pi life with the cheapest option Smile

No controller issues here.
