I have been painting tanks for many years... just at home for my projects. I used to use cellulose many years ago, but 2k is so so much better. to prep if its a good tank:-

I flat it off and give it a coat of 2k primer, when dry I flat it off again

then a couple of coats of base coat, and soon as that has lost its shine and tacked off, a coat of lacquer. remember the first coat of lacquer should be misted on, dont aim for a shine, let it tack off and give it a full coat. if there are no decals I give it another coat.

If there are decals, I let it dry over night and then flat it off wet with 1000 grit wet and dry. stick the decals on and give it a mist coat all over... mist it again over the decals... then hit it with a full coat. the misting over the decals is important because if you are going to get a run, this is where it will be as the paint pools on the lip, and then runs.

If you are on bare metal, use an etch primer. I find the UPOL rattle cans to be very good.

a couple of other tips.

a cheap halogen heater makes a great drying tool in colder weather.

spray with the gun in one hand, and an LED torch in the other... sounds daft but if you shine the torch at the right angle you will see where you need more paint! try it!

A good spray gun is key... I have the use of several proffesional guns, but I now use the one in the link below. its incredible for the money! use the 1.4 nozzle for tanks.

for 2k you really should use an air fed mask, and extraction. However, on a warm sunny day, my mate sprays tanks outside and gets amazing results. he still uses a good mask, tight on his face though. in one of the pictures you can see my air fed mask hanging up! my compressor pulls air from outside for this reason...
