Trying to fing a B&B I tried to get to some years ago.

Near Seend, or Seend Cleeve.

I only saw it in bad conditions, in the dark, but it was close to or hard on the road, nead a junction, and looked like a small castle type of house, very unusual. I seem to remember that the front door (big, arched?) was actually very close to the road. Was it on a bend? Unsure. I don't think there were many other houses near it.

Anyone know of it? It might not be a B&B any more.

There's not many around there to choose from. Laughing

Therefore it's probably Cleeve House assuming wherever you stayed hasn't closed.

Next time, you could just smash nobbys back gate in rather than paying for a b&b.

It's still in a state from your last visit and Mrs Nobby says I'm not allowed any more play dates.

I didn't get in, the chap who answered the door said he'd "got no room". I hadn't seen or touched the road for about 150 miles in about 8 hours due to it being all snowy, and no-one was travelling. I was not in good condition, being all icy and all out, I think he turned his nose up. He gave me the number of another place, which I managed to ring from a 'phone box (mobile phones had not been invented) before getting there, "Lots of room" the posh lady said. She didn't look too pleased when I arrived, but she was very good about it, which was lucky, or I don't know what would have happened, I could hardly move. So, I gave her the price of a whole week's rent for my normal digs, and stayed a night with 3 extra fan heaters. Nearby there was a long low straightish sort of road with wooden posts at one side, possibly near water by the look but could not see any for snow. There was a pub 1/4 mile away, which I eventually walked to and talked to the barmaid and someone from the kitchen all night. No-one else there.

I might go and have a look when the weather warms up a bit.

Does nobby's back gate get smashed in a lot?

Ste goes through it regularly, and Marm and Fretty make use of it occasionally. Fisty, Grr666 and the northern bunch have an open invite.

Everyone smashes nobbys back gate in.

From your highly detailed description of a long low straightish sort of road with wooden posts at one side, possibly near water, I'm going to say that you found the canal.

Have some Google Maps.
