That paint job was already done to the bike as I bought it. Apparently, Yamaha UK commissioned a handful for this bike.
It was done by Dream Machine, and so privately would have been ££££££££££££££££££££££!
I have had a silver one, a red one, a blue one, that yellow and black one, and now my current red and black one - each colour was the fastest while I owned it
P.S. I am not in the least bit biased towards the Fazer 1000 ____________________ Chickenystripgeezer's Biking Life (Latest update 19/10/18) Belgium, France, Italy, Austria tour 2016 Picos de Europa, Pyrenees and French Alps tour 2017 Scotland Trip 1, now with BONUS FEATURE edit, 5/10/19, on page 2 Scotland Trip 2 Luxembourg, Black Forest, Switzerland, Vosges Trip 2017

It's a 2 wheeled car, maybe that appeals to some people, the only positive was the engine that grew on me as all that de retuned/mid-range stuff started to make sense. |
Happily, the Fazer 1000 exists. Therefore, there is no point in the CBF existing. ____________________ Chickenystripgeezer's Biking Life (Latest update 19/10/18) Belgium, France, Italy, Austria tour 2016 Picos de Europa, Pyrenees and French Alps tour 2017 Scotland Trip 1, now with BONUS FEATURE edit, 5/10/19, on page 2 Scotland Trip 2 Luxembourg, Black Forest, Switzerland, Vosges Trip 2017

But at least if I got the CBF1000 I'd be getting a much newer bike for the same money. Surely that counts for something??? ____________________ Must Go Faster

So the FZS1000 is better than the CBF1000 without question apparently.
But is the FZS600 better than the CBF1000, THAT is the question??? ____________________ Must Go Faster

For me it is, and for me I think I would prefer the 600 too. But I haven't actually ridden the CBF It's just what I have read and others have told me, coupled with long experience with bikes, and looking for what bike to get next myself through 30-something years of riding - I could be wrong, and you might love the CBF; especially if you don't try a Fazer
Remember this: if you love riding, you are not likely to only ever try one bike, so it is forgivable to make mistakes in your choice I've done it before. Adds to your experience, which makes it easier (sometimes) to choose what bikes you go for in the future. ____________________ Chickenystripgeezer's Biking Life (Latest update 19/10/18) Belgium, France, Italy, Austria tour 2016 Picos de Europa, Pyrenees and French Alps tour 2017 Scotland Trip 1, now with BONUS FEATURE edit, 5/10/19, on page 2 Scotland Trip 2 Luxembourg, Black Forest, Switzerland, Vosges Trip 2017

That's true my uncle started out on an SV650 and took it to Europe and almost instantly regretted it. Swapped it for a FZS1000 when he got back and has never looked back. Raves about it and says he wouldn't want to ride anything else. I don't wanna be seen to just be copying him LOL but I will try to make the best informed choice I can with my given budget and see what is available at the time I've actually got the cash in my pocket to start actively viewing bikes.
Going back to the paint job you seem to think it would be expensive. I can get a whole car resprayed for under a grand, I wouldn't expect a bike to be more than a couple of hundred quid if it's done in a single colour??? ____________________ Must Go Faster

Nothing wrong with making an informed choice, but I always think that usually applies more if you need the bike for practical reasons. If it's more about just loving bikes and riding, and wanting a bit of fun through that medium, then I've always allowed the heart to have more say in what I've gone for. In other words, a particular bike has caught my imagination, and I've gone for it. Usually, I'd have read a few road tests and reports in the bike press just to make sure it wasn't going to be a complete lemon, and has a few good points I would like, but practicality rarely came into it! Sometimes my 'method' didn't work, but mostly I have no regrets.
So if there's a bike out there you really have a strong hankering for and you think it will do what you want it to do, go for it. You can always trade it for something else if it disappoints you, albeit usually with some financial hit.
Paint jobs for bikes, if done by specialist firms, are usually pretty extortionate ime, but my experience is limited and it will depend on who you go to. Once you have the bike, if it's your only bike, my experience also says that you'll likely drop the idea and just ride the thing anyway.
Not to mention it's only really worth it on a bike that is really special to you, again imo.
Not forgetting you'll likely harm the resale value, and given what I said about the chances of going through a few different bikes as the years pass, it's rare that your first one will be your favourite, except maybe from a nostalgia point of view.
I'd forget paint jobs until you have more experience, and know more about what you really like. For now, get a bike, and ride it!
P.S. There are loads of caveats to what I've written above, and at the end of the day, you are responsible for your choice ____________________ Chickenystripgeezer's Biking Life (Latest update 19/10/18) Belgium, France, Italy, Austria tour 2016 Picos de Europa, Pyrenees and French Alps tour 2017 Scotland Trip 1, now with BONUS FEATURE edit, 5/10/19, on page 2 Scotland Trip 2 Luxembourg, Black Forest, Switzerland, Vosges Trip 2017

For a while, I used an RG500 to commute on the M11 from London to Huntingdon. Not my brightest choice of bike for that trip
Tbh, a Fazer 600 (FZS600) would definitely fit all your requirements. A mate came with me on my first Euro tour, me on the thou, him on the 600, and it coped just fine - more than adequate. They handle pretty well, go pretty well, have a bit of weather protection, comfortable - just a great all-rounder. The only real advantage the thou has is that you can be lazier with the gear changes. But some like stomping up and down the gearbox in the twisties; I do, but for everyday use, the thou is more relaxed. ____________________ Chickenystripgeezer's Biking Life (Latest update 19/10/18) Belgium, France, Italy, Austria tour 2016 Picos de Europa, Pyrenees and French Alps tour 2017 Scotland Trip 1, now with BONUS FEATURE edit, 5/10/19, on page 2 Scotland Trip 2 Luxembourg, Black Forest, Switzerland, Vosges Trip 2017

I've just been up to see my mechanic to collect some bits I left up there from our last encounter with the YBR and he reminded me that before Christmas I showed some interest in the DL1000 V-STROM he has up there, it's his personal bike (one of three) and although he hasn't taken it out in over a year he had no real desire to sell it at the time I asked if it was for sale so no more was said about it as he kinda seemed a bit neutral to the idea giving me the impression if he DID sell it it would be on his terms and probably more than the bike is worth. However he's spoken with his wife and now wouldn't mind selling it. He's indicated something in the region of £2,300 which seems like a good price to me (however I have seen a Fazer 600 I can probably get for £1,800). I can't remember the year or mileage but it's the older model so gonna be somewhere between 2002 and 2008. I'm wondering if I'm REALLY cheeky I could probably get it down to £2,000 and he might even let me pay it in two £1,000 instalments a month apart.
Pros - it's on the same street as me so no travelling plus I know it's had no expenses spared and has been very well maintained by a fully qualified mechanic, and buying it from someone I know, also any further work done on it will be taken to him so he will know his way around it and what it's had done in the past etc.
Cons - The first bike I showed any real interest in was the DL1000 V-STROM, however now I've considered the likes of the Fazer, even the 600, looking at this now just seems a bit dull and boring LOL
What you think Chicken Licken? Dunno why I'm asking you're just gonna tell me to get the Fazer LOL ____________________ Must Go Faster

Nope, not gonna comment on this one, as it's outside of my experience. Time for someone else to advise you ____________________ Chickenystripgeezer's Biking Life (Latest update 19/10/18) Belgium, France, Italy, Austria tour 2016 Picos de Europa, Pyrenees and French Alps tour 2017 Scotland Trip 1, now with BONUS FEATURE edit, 5/10/19, on page 2 Scotland Trip 2 Luxembourg, Black Forest, Switzerland, Vosges Trip 2017

It's a tall bike! Haven't got on it yet but it looks a bit intimidating. But that's me coming from my toy YBR! Got to pop up there again on Thursday to get the rear sprocket done on the YBR, maybe I'll ask for a test ride while I'm up there. ____________________ Must Go Faster

www.motorcyclenews.com wrote: | New rider: Do you really need a powerful bike?
There’s no right or wrong time to buy your first big bike, the key to the process is to be honest with yourself.
If you have been driving a car for years and have built up a fund of roadcraft in your head, and you are confident that you have the ability to control a more powerful bike, then go for it. After all, the throttle works both ways.
But if you are just starting out on your career as a rider, and have only been running a bike for a little while, take a good long look in the mirror at yourself.
Ask yourself whether you have the confidence to control a more powerful bike. Will you be able to resist the lure of showing off in front of your mates/girls, are all your mates riding gods who could suck you into going too fast, too soon?
At the end of the day, you are the one in charge of your own destiny, be honest with yourself and you’ll have a great time biking. |
Yeah fuck it, I'm gonna get that ZZR1400! ____________________ Must Go Faster

So I'm a week or two away from a purchase (hopefully), while initially I was dead set on an adventure / tall tourer I've since decided I can probably cope with a naked/street if the only 'touring' I'm going to be doing is to and from Cambridge once a fortnight and maybe a couple of trips to France/Spain a year. Seems you can get a better bike for your money while looking outside the adventure category and a smaller bike is probably going to be more practical around town and better through the twisties. So after much soul searching I THINK I've narrowed it down to either a Fazer or a Speed Triple.
I can get a first gen Fazer 1000 (2000-2005) for for comfortably under £2,500. If I wanted to splash out on the second gen (2006-) I think I'd be looking more in the region of £3,000+ and I'm not sure I want to spend that much on my first big bike.
I can get a first gen Speed Triple 955 (1997-2004) for approx. £2,000. Again, if I wanted to splash the cash on a newer second gen 1050 (2005-2010) I think I'd be looking at £2,500 to £3,000 and not sure I wanna spend that much.
The Tuono 1000 (2003-2011) keeps rearing it's ugly head now and again as I'm searching, I'm interested but not sure if it's a bit too left-field / unconventional / non-mainstream for a first bike??? There's one on AutoTrader for under £2,000 but all the others are closer to £3,000.
I think the Fazer is probably the better bike but there's a couple of the Speed Triples for sale at the moment in lime green which really does it for me. I think they look sweet! Others may say garish LOL.
The Speed Triple is a bit lighter than the Fazer (although the Fazer is more powerful but to be honest the Speed Triple will be plenty powerful enough for me so that doesn't really concern me). The lightness of the Speed Triple is a bonus as is the fact they're a few hundred quid cheaper and I can get one in that lime colour I like.
I know this thread is probably past it's sell-by-date and has probably been debated to death, but any input would be gratefully received from anyone kind enough to give me their opinion. Pros/cons of the three bikes as compared to each other? Any first hand experience on either? ____________________ Must Go Faster
