My first PC was an Amstrad DD 1640. It didn't have a hard drive. It ran DOS and/or GEM off twin 5 1/2" flopy drives.

I was still using it in 1998 to word process Uni course work on wordperfect 1.0. By that time there were only two file types that were cross compatible with word for windows (.rtf and .txt) and I'd had to retrofit a 3 1/4" floppy drive.

The 1640 referrs to the amount of RAM in kilobytes... Which was 50x the RAM of my previous computer.

I have a 1512DD... It has a 20mb MFM hard disc. It has also been upgraded to 640kb ram.

Amstrad

Someone showed me inside a Amstrad PC once and they'd made it so you couldn't easily get to/upgrade components. Not sure if that was normal for Sir Alan or if it was just that particular model.

There's your answer. He liked to produce 'all in one' units, be that Hi fi's, VCR/TV Combos, Microcomputers, PC's whatever. Very much his ethos.

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

I also remember I had "something" I think it was called an Interface 3?

Just a red button on it, sat at the back of all the gubbins on my my rubber key speccy, and would copy just about any game onto a microdrive. So Way of the Exploding Fist for instance would load in about six seconds, instead of 5 minutes.
