I have a Daytona 675 which has a glossy black radiator. I’ve just noticed there is some missing paint on the fins, leaving small whitish bits. There isn’t very much but I want to tidy it up.

Other than giving it a good clean and dry is there anything else I need to do in preparation? I just want to cover the white bits with a spray of black paint ideally.

Also, what is the likely cause of this? I didn’t notice any a couple of weeks back but rode it recently when there was salt on the roads, so could it be corrosion?

Thanks

The white stuff is where the aluminium is corroding. Salt will hurry this along.

I would be tempted, if it's a spot or two, to scrape very gently and then touch it up with a small artists-type brush and some cylinder paint, rather than to spray the lot.

Black engine enamel is good for this kind of thing.

If you want a satin finish, plastikote wood stove or BBQ paint is excellent providing you make sure you don't scuff it until it's had a few heat cycles.

The paint on radiators tends to bubble with corrosion then underrun, then a big flake falls off all at once looking like it's appeared from nowhere.

Thanks for the advice guys. I’ll touch it up this weekend then once dry I’ll cover the radiator in ACF50 to stop any further corrosion. I’ve got radiator and down pipes covers on the way so if I do a crap job at least it’ll be hidden.

If you want paint to stick to aluminium you will need to acid etch it.

Halfords have all that shit if you get stuck.

Just slabbering more paint on may not be the solution.
The corrosion is under the paint so you may only have seen the tip of the iceberg. Shocked

It may hold it at bay until you can remove the rad and paint thoroughly.

Thanks Thumbs Up
With it being such a small amount I don’t think it’s necessary to paint the whole thing at the moment. I just want to prevent anymore occurring if possible. A good clean and cover with ACF50 should do the job right?

Agreed! I favour the stove paint over the BBQ which I found is more matt. For a rad though I suspect the heat resist properties are not required.

I am doing something similar. I need to repair this, as the aluminum has delaminated from the bottom, and the fan mounts have snapped off.

All the paint on any metal on my BMW K1300 is flaking. (Long story)
I rubbed down the worst patches, etched, primed and painted some bit easy to reach. Three or four months later the bits I painted were as bad as before. Very Happy

Normally it's shit painting process that allow the salt water to get between paint and metal.
So the creep is difficult to eradicate by touching up.
I took the final drive off, nitromors-ed it to remove all paint. Etched, primed and painted. Refitted but time will tell if I cured the problem.

I'll maybe bolt some zinc anodes on the hoowur next. 😁

Looks like "interesting rebuild time". I've never done one that looks so bad.

At £468 for new Honda, and £260 for a new pattern, not really much choice.

All second-hand ones are in similar condition for similar money. I have found one for £25 in California that is immaculate and going to buy this as a standby, and that works out £80 posted which is still cheaper than buying from EU.

I assume it's "do it up to use but looks are not too important"?

Pretty much, you don't see much of it on the bike, Tupperware hides it all, just going jbweld some steel plate, and make fan mounts and jb weld on, and then hammerite it.
