Now I’ve cleaned it up I don’t think the lining has lifted at all - think that was an illusion caused by a shadow between the lining and the wheel itself. The crack seems pretty hairline....can’t feel it with a fingernail

I don't like the look of the inside of the drum. You can see where the shoes are pressing against the surface, and where they aren't. I might be tempted to try emery cloth mounted on the shoes to "skim" it, but I would be tempted to keep an eye out for a decent second-have wheel.

I agree, it’s not ideal but I will monitor it. It’s a tool bike and doesn’t go hooning around so that brake isn’t getting a lot of hammer so hopefully it’ll wear in. The problem with another wheel is what state it’s in as wheel issues seem to be common with these bikes!

Update: took it for a ride; no binding, no squealing anymore and it’s pretty much perfectly smooth now (!). The slightest undulation but it’s so slight it’s barely detectable even when concentrating on feeling it. Maybe the crud clearing and gentle sanding had a good effect?!
