My father highlighted this gizmo and i wondered if anyone uses it.

https://safer-turn.com/smart-brake-module/

Smart Brake Module is a small electronic device, which senses when the bike is slowing down by the means of engine braking or down-shifting and it activates the brake light.

It seems like a great idea but interested to hear what other have to say.

€80! bugger that.

I honestly think this is a solution without a problem, that'll be triggered every-time you roll off

Brake lights coming on when you're not using your brakes sounds questionable. Laughing

i see what you are saying and it is a pretty expensive mod. it has the option to have the brake light pulsing (as opposed to full on) when decelerating using engine.

It seems a good idea to me, especially on fast roads or during darkness hours.

Having much expereince of following a v-twin on an i4 bike, I would have loved this (for them). Now I'm on a v-twin myself, I do worry that the person behiond might (as I did) not realise the rate at which I can slow down without showing a brake light.

That said, I would also question the reliability of it, and its ability to consistently differentiate between aggressive retardation and a few bumps in the road.

There are already a bicycle versions of the same concept.

Or just use your right foot to barely touch the back brake on if there's someone up your arse.
I can't help expecting that at some point that thing'll play up and not come on at all, or come on at random times.

Kinell. If you look to see whether your machine is "compatible" (I should think everything is) you get:

"You are one step away to get compatibility confirmation. Enter your e-mail below to receive the Smart Brake Module compatibility confirmation from the STS technical team."

Not today thank you.

This is what I tend to do.

It would be more useful IMO to have a brake light failure indicator.

Back in the 90's... you could get little novelty 'smurf' like helmet ornaments to stick on your hat, that had an LED, a deaf-aid battery and an 'inertia-switch' (ball-bearing on a copper track, with a spring behind it!)... that pretty much did the same thing.... its nothing 'new'

And to my mind, its all a bit like Audi-Indicators.... just why? really. "But he didn't indicate!" says the No-Win lawyer as he goes into court.... "So WHY weren't you watching where either HE or YOU were bludy going!"

If twit don't look, twit don't look! Its just another excuse for them not to look, "Well, their retard lamp didn't come on! How was I supposed to know he was slowing down!"

"Technology" is the practical application of scientific knowledge to solve a 'problem'... like using a lever to lift something you cant by hand.

This really isn't 'technology', its a gadget... its a solution looking for a problem!

Yamaha had such a device back in the 70’s but it’s never seen the light of day since. Was standard on RD250/350’s and the XS650.

General consensus is that it is not a good idea.

Wasn't getting one anyway but sounded a good safety feature.

You could also fit one of these
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/12V-Motorcycle-Universal-Handlebar-Headlight-LED-Fog-light-On-Off-Switch-Compass/262922923733?fits=UKM_StreetName%3AClassic&epid=1995822960&hash=item3d376d6ed5:g:LRgAAOSwYIxYBxZH:rk:159:pf:0

Not only will it switch your fog light on but also has a handy compass built in if the fog gets really thick!

That switch needs a spirit level too.

Engine braking shocked me on mine first time I rode it and I knew followers could be caught out with it. To compensate I slightly touch my rear brake pedal enough to light the rear lamp but not enough to actuate the brakes. The lamp lights up but the engine slows me down.

I think they are a great idea. Now that Audi drivers have a new fucking gadget to show off, they do actually fucking indicate. Occasionally.

Some Audis now feature a foot-massager built into the rear of the front seats so that passengers in the back can take their shoes off and place their feet into a recess and this contraption starts to sort of manipulate them. So don't start having a fucking pop at Audi. They're trying for us - day in, day out, these dudes are coming up with shit that will change our very lives.

That's only going to be useful when the cars drive themselves or are parked up because I've never seen anyone in the front passenger seat let alone the back seats in an Audi
