Hi guys,

I'm going to need a torque wrench for my hub nut as the torque setting is 230nm on the car.

My current torque wrench only goes up to 210nm, and as this is likely to be one of the only jobs that I can think of that will require more than 210nm, then I'd ideally prefer not to spend £100 on a third torque wrench. That said, if that's what it needs, then I will get that.

The only beam torque wrenches I can find are of dubious brands and prices. Something like this:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/S-T300W-Torque-Wrench-Beam-Type-1-2-Square-Drive-0-300Nm-Tool-460mm-Length-/123021207620

Forgetting the usual issues with readability of beam torque wrenches, do you guys think I can rely on a torque wrench like this for my hub nut?

Otherwise I'll be looking at a new norbar. Likely the 300nm max ones.

Thanks guys.

I wouldn't bother personally, I'd tighten it to 210 and give it a nudge more. Probably more accurate than a cheap torque wrench.

Thanks Chris and polar bear, thinking it over again you are probably right. At least that way I know I've got it near and then beyond that setting. I'll just need to be careful not to over-torque it.

Good point bloggsy! I hadn't considered hiring one so might be better if I'm in any doubt. I'll see what tool hire places are available nearby and what they offer. Thank you.

Thanks hong kong phooey. I hadn't considered those adapters and it might actually be more useful than a 300nm torque wrench as seems more versatile.

Thanks guys that's given me something to think about. I think you're right that the cheap torque wrench probably would have just been a waste of money. If it was a decent quality brand then maybe it would have been more suitable. Thumbs Up

As said, 210 plus a bit is close enough for a hub nut.

Alternatively, 40kg (bag of coal) on a 600mm breaker bar
is: 40*9.8*0.600 = 235Nm.

A digital luggage scale is another option, but 40kg is may be
too much force for Chinese plastic. If you can find a 1m breaker
bar or a 1m length of pipe, you need 23.45kg on the scale for
230Nm.

Around a fiver for a digital luggage scale. They are generally
more accurate than any mechanical torque wrench and just
as accurate as a very expensive digital torque wrench.
It will also be useful for checking calibration of your other
two torque wrenches.

Think about an electronic one, such as from Machine Mart. I got one of those for a similar application, pug hub nut is yours ????

Worked a treat once you a used to it and saved buying another ( much larger ) torque wrench.

It sounds as if money is no problem to you so go for the one you have mentioned, the norbar one or similar. Brittol ones are made in ITALY ffs!
