If you are looking for protection, it's best to try all bike clothing on before you buy.

Even if you then go off and get it from a 'net place, fit is much more important than price is as far as protection is concerend often.

They will however be very unlikely to help your gear shift problems and will offer very, very little protection.

I wear proper leather army style boots at the least and sports bike boots for faster stuff.

I swear by British army boots, good quality leather, comfy to walk in, waterproof. My last set cost 25 quid.

They also don't look stupid when you forget to take your shoes to work with you ...Yams? Wink

I got my boots from Hein Gericke. £40 and just look like work boots. Seen quite sturdy though. Thumbs Up

Depends on how you define cheap...

I got some £70 boots from heine gericke, they're a little bland, but do their job perfectly.

I use fireman boots, my Dad gets them from "somwhere" Shifty

They are very comfy and I gues they offer a fair amount of protection seeing as the fire service use them.

Ever thought about riding shoes for the summer months? Much cheaper than boots, but also much less water-resistant. Lovin' 'em here on the west coast, though. Cool Wink

Not to mention their superb comfort factor. Thumbs Up

Akito make good cheap stuff, ideal for beginners.
I found their boot sizes were equivalent to shoe sizes.
Suggest the Monza boots or if you want something shorter then try the Miami ones.

A quick search on eBay got this result, or this result just for Miami boots.

HTH Thumbs Up
