Dear wise men and women of BCF..

The concrete of my small drive ( about a car and a half's worth) is cracked and unsightly. I have a plan to break it up put to one side, lay a membrane then reuse the broken concrete (fist sized pieces is my aim)maybe mixed with sharp sand as a base - whacked down and then topped with shingle - concerns are that I wont be able to break concrete down small enough - thoughts?

You will be able to break the concrete into small pieces, but it will take a lot of work and time, and unless you want to raise the level you will be left with an excess.

It would work if you don't mind the extended mess period to do it.
The best way would be drop it in a skip and buy bags of decent hardcore, any jagged edges will tend to pierce the membrane with traffic squashing it about in wet spells.

How difficult it is to break up will depend on how old the concrete is. How thick is the slab of concrete?

Breaking up old concrete is a horrible job, lugging the lumps of broken up concrete around is just as fun. Laughing

Even if you decide that breaking it into fist sized pieces is too much work, you'll still need to break it into manageable size pieces so you can lift them into a skip.

Have you thought about moving house instead?

On a cost to effort ratio i would skip the concrete in the biggest lumps you can and have proper hardcore delivered.

Broken concrete makes a poor substrate unless it's compacted and blinded then a decent material laid on top. If you put it on top of a membrane it'll poke holes everywhere in the membrane, that's why you use blinding as a barrier between the concrete and DPM.

If you need the concrete to level the drive off or provide drainage then break it up and whack it down, then buy the shingle grids you can get and put those over the top, fill the grids with shingle. That should give you a nice firm well-draining drive which won't let the shingle migrate.

You could hire a crusher from jewson and crush it down to 20mm then compact it and put the blinding down as pete suggested

You'll still have a bit to get rid off though

He could do but at 500 quid hire it would be cheaper to get a 8 yard skip in, dig the lot out, put down some type 1, wack it down and shingle on top.

An option, but sadly (?) this is a recent move since an enforced change in my previous domestic arrangements..

Ideally removal and type1 would be good. But that will cost £100s I don't have (see above). Blinding with a bag of sharp was my intention. I guess existing slab is only 3-4" max - hence it cracked up over the weight of something greater than a Fiat 500. Not thought of the grids.. will look into that.

Cheers

PS Aldi have 20kg breaker on sale next week fo 99 quid. Worth a look given it only really has to last this job?

The longer you wait to do it, the easier the job will be Wink

Hire a Hilti breaker, skip the concrete and put down MOT1 (DTP1). Whack it down well and you'll have a clean flat surface.

I wouldn't attempt to reuse the concrete when there's a proper solution that'll bind well and give you a decent surface already out there.

1. Dig a series of large holes in your garden
2. Lob in all your concrete lumps and backfill
3. Advertise the remaining pile of topsoil and freecycle/facebook/whatever, free for collection.

Alternatively, just hire a bloody skip and be done with it...

If you hire a jaw crusher, don't chuck too much into it at once or it will lose efficiency and may jam which is a PITA.

It's got a good impact energy (55J), and a good 3-year guarantee.

You'll want the pointed bit, not sure why people are shown using the chisel one.

Why do you want a shingle driveway? I never like riding on shingle.

Just back from HSS after returning something, their breaker hire is about £50/day said the bloke. The breaker is bigger than the Aldi one though.

Personally I'd buy the Aldi one & give it a go.

Yeah thanks I think I will. As for the old concrete - logistically re-use will be PITA . I know a farmer down the road maybe he'll take it off my hands for packing out gateways.. That or a 4m skip should do it
