Hi All,

Has anyone got life insurance/critical illness?

As I'm starting a family, I went to get additional life insurance+critical illness and because I had to declare riding a bike (a specific question), suddenly the premium jumped 30%.

Previously I don't even remember being asked the question as the policy was taken out over 10 years ago. Although, I didn't ride a bike at that time.

Do others declare it?

I have. Try a different company. It might be worth going direct to see what they ask instead of via an "umbrella" concern like go compare. If they ask, you should answer correctly. Check what you're getting for cover, too, sometimes people will try and flog you stuff you don't need alongside what you do.

I'm heavily insured, personal accident, sickness, loss of limb.

I've had the same for decades, more of less all the time I've been a
courier. I'm insured by CICA, they only cover high risk people like me.

What the others said; but whatever you do, don't end up buying a policy where you've lied about being a biker. Cos like it or not, realistically if you die suddenly, the most likely cause is going to be biking, and if so your loved ones wouldn't get the payout you'd intended. Which would be a bit daft, huh?

As above really. I was never asked when I took out my policy when my first daughter was born, but for fuck sake make sure you have the right cover. I did mine through a locally well respected IFA.

I was knocked off my bike in a head on 3 weeks ago, I spent 10 days in hospital and I'm going to be off work for 3 months.

I thought it would never happen to me, it has. So I'd want to know my wife and daughters would be financially stable should the outcome have been worse than it has. Thumbs Up

I took out a policy years ago, and they said there was only three things it did not cover:

Bone breakage if you have osteoporosis
If you die in a war zone
If you die as the pilot of a plane that crashed

If they ask tell them. If they don't ask... meh.

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

I told them, didn't change the cost but did flag up I'm not covered if I'm "Racing" Rolling Eyes (as if, I'm far too slow!)

Don't worry, I will declare it and make sure I get the right cover.

It's just a mine field, and I don't know which ones ask the question as my previous policy never asked.

Just a bit annoying as riding a motorbike is quite common!

TBH, I didn't wait for them to ask, I specifically asked the question to make sure I was covered.

Standard cover seems to exclude 'racing or timed events'.

Just to let you know, it was LV= which ask if you ride a motorbike on UK roads- then whack up the premium.

Everyone excludes racing though..

There must surely be specialist insurers who do offer that cover though. Everything's available at a price...
