Backs of my hands and my knuckles are sore, bit swollen, rough skin calluses and bleeding a little. Think it's down to being outdoors a lot.

What do?

Hand cream? Embarassed Sick Thumbs Down

Probably going to have to be. Sad so recommendations?

Yes some sort of hand cream, preferably with lanolin in it. If you're outdoors a lot, applying something then would be a good preventative treatment. Vaseline, or even lard.

Broken skin - E45
Dry, itchy skin - Hydrocortizone

E45 sorts most of my skin complaints, mostly dry, sore hands from wire sawing cutting.

Welcome to working outside all winter bashing your hands on everything.

Manning up gets you so far, but some of those creams like Pete said or the Norwegian stuff really do help. Its fine to ignore at first but when you can't work in gloves due to detail fine work, and are getting solvents like alcohol and white spirit on your hands it stings a touch and probably isn't that good for you.

Also coming home and touching anything clean like towels or letters and getting blood stains on everything doesn't make for a smooth home life.

Try to wear clean dry gloves outside in low temperatures and use a hand cream if your paws get into a state or just to
prevent them doing so as much as possible.

Just to add: Wet cement and concrete will destroy your hands too.
All of the above creams work.

I find any glycerin based stuff works well, the Norwegian Neutrogena stuff has the joint advantages of being perfume free and an association with a bunch of hard bastards (deep sea fishermen) and therefore in no way effeminent.

Lanolin: Squeezed from the sebaceous glands of sheep.
I suppose if it works then use it!

It's actually from the wool; lanolin is secreted and coats the wool to make it waterproof and weather-resistant. If you shear sheep or handle "raw" wool, your skin will be supple. Unsure how they get it off the wool. It's good stuff.

... from the sebaceous glands ... duh!

Quote:
Unsure how they get it off the wool.

Until reasonably recently they used to gently boil it with a bit of Sunlight soap to get off all the dirt, sheepysweat and dags, then the lanolin would float to the top, take out the wool and squeeze it really "dry" ... and then they just simmer the water until its reduced down, what's left is the lanolin. I think modern technology is to use a centrifuge maybe ... Thinking

Really no idea about chemical extraction (if such a thing exists, no doubt it does in this day and age ... )

Nah - they squeeze sheep.

Ducks have an oil gland. Has that stuff been turned into cream too?

It's a by product from when they make the tape.

I have to pay a lot of attention to my hand skin due to working both outside AND in a medical environment where hands need to be clean.

Stop using normal soap, use a pH balanced soap. I use one called baktolin pure.

Use rubber gloves if you do the dishes, washing up liquid is horrible to yuor hands. Use nitrile gloves if you are working on your motorbike because engine oil/brake dust etc is also nasty. The more you get exposed to it, the more likely you are to have a reaction. I've HAD to start wearing gloves because it triggers dermatitis now. Black nitrile gloves are really tough.

Only WASH your hands if they are visibly dirty and even then just wash them in water if you can get away with it. If they are really mucky, you'll have to use that pH balanced soap.

Don't rub your hands dry, pat them dry.

If you need your hands to be CLEAN (eg before eating etc) but they aren't visibly dirty. Use an alcohol handrub. Keep rubbing it until they are dry, don't wipe it off on your trousers/a towel. That way any oils it strips out of your pores are rubbed back in again

I also use Norwegian formula hand cream. I find It works best if the skin is slightly damp (so if you've washed and patted dry your hands, that's a good time to put the handcream on). I have multiple tubes of it about the place (Bathroom, bedroom, kitchen car, work).

If they get really bad, slather them in aqueous cream and put a set of thin cotton gloves on before you go to sleep (pharmacists sell cotton gloves for this exact purpose).
