So I have this GoPro knock-off that I've fitted to various bikes over the years and I'm coming back from London Bridge this evening...

Sat at the lights around Kennington an' chillin' when I spot a slightly exuberant skate boarder totally f*ck up an ollie and end up in an inglorious heap on the pavement Very Happy

"Dammit! I mounted the camera to the bike..."

I have the old "boxy" shaped camera like the early GoPros so I don't fancy gluing it to my helmet but what do ppl think of having these little cylindrical cameras tacked to their helmets?

I have tried various cameras over the past couple of years, from a Go-Pro clone, (which like you say, doesn't really suit helmet mounting), a Contour Roam (nice cylindrical camera, but no loop recording mode, and piss poor microphone), and have finally settled on a Drift Ghost HD, slightly bulkier than the Contour, but much more functionality and more suited to helmet mounting than the Go-Pro, also has option to mount external microphone (which i will be doing once it arrives from China China China)

Ghost branded aux mic is the best. Have tried about 6 different cheapies and none are as robust or reproduce sound
as well as the all metal constructed, genuine item.

Why not? I've had an SJCam M10 up to 170MPH held on my lid with the standard 3M pad, though for full disclosure I should say I lost an SJ4000 at around a ton but the 3M pad was a cheap fake and had been there for 2 years.

Agree, the lead is thicker than some, also not all microphones are equal they vary quite a lot in gain which can cause problems with excess wind noise for example, even if you turn the level right down.
Better to buy one designed for it than end up with 3 or 4 not much use.

Drift are still about best all rounder with good battery life, nice profile for helmet use and the rubber case means will often survive even major bashing.
A used Ghost HD or Ghost S would be a good buy, or consider the Ghost X.
The 4K version has a poor rep though later firmware resolves most problems people winged about early on.

Both new versions are significantly smaller but are a pain to swap batteries, in fact its best avoided, attach a powerbank or charge from bike for long runs.
They also did away with separate 3.5mm mic jack but you don't need anything like that ludicrous gopro mic adapter. They do a small splitter cable enables charging with mic attached

I got a GoPro 7 a while ago and attached that to the top of my helmet, the quality is brilliant and very smooth since it doesn't pick up vibrations from the bike.
The pain is if I want to use the camera for something else, then the attachment has to be undone and it's not easy to get the angle right every time when putting it back on the helmet.

I also attached it to my sprocker (springer/cocker spaniel) and whilst it was very funny, you can hardly see anything with all the bouncing around and shaking she does! Laughing

Drift Ghost X on side of helmet. Easy to operate there and battery life is really good. Has a looping mode and pic quality is decent if you don't want more than 1080. The 4K version is nowhere near as impressive on the battery life.

Old Gopro 3+ on the rear of the bike facing backwards still does ok, again at 1080 with a looping mode. Extra battery bacpac gives longer life, but still nowhere near as long as the standard Drift Ghost X battery.

Wotcha.

Yep - Drift Ghost here too.

No problems with it . . . . but I did have the remote come to grief under a car wheel. That'll teach me to make sure it's fixed on securely.
