Hi all,

I got a stupid question but couldn't find a clear answer anywhere.
I got flashed by a camera in january (39 kittens killed in a 30 zone if you're interested).
I received my notice of intended prosecution etc... offering me 3 points + £100, fair enough but they're also asking me to send over my license for them to check for the points remainings etc..
Does that mean I won't be able to ride/drive until they deem appropriate to send me back my license? (which seems to be about 4 weeks according to internet, note they're also providing the telephone number to complain if they don't send it back Thumbs Up )

The only info I could find online was that we should be able to produce a license if stopped by the police (or in a 7 days period if not carrying it) but nothing about this particular situation

No. Just send it off and keep riding.

If you have to show it for some reason, explain why you don't have it and you'll be fine.

Good point for the insurance, I wouldn't have thought of it actually.

Don't tell them you've "surrendered" your license though, because you haven't! Shocked Laughing

Copy front and back of your licence, just for your records and just in case it's lost.

Oh and send by recorded delivery and keep the receipt to prove you sent it off.

I'm definetely keeping copies and proof of postage etc.. Mr. Green

It does say 'surrender' on the document, but I assume it's just a technical term.

it's one of those:

If you don't send them your licence, then you'll not have complied with one of the conditions of the Conditional Offer of Fixed Penalty.

In which case, they'll refund the penalty and take you to court. Where it'll cost you more than £100.

I think it goes back to the pre-computerised / endorsements written on the paper licence days. Fuck knows why you still have to surrender it these days.

But yeah, take a photocopy of it in case they fuck up. It happens.

Yes, it is a technical term.

"Surrendering your driving licence
There’s no legal age at which you must stop driving. You can decide when to stop, but medical conditions can affect your driving and might mean you have to give up your driving licence until you can meet the medical standards of fitness to drive again.

When you decide to stop driving or are advised by your doctor to stop you’ll need to tell DVLA and send them your licence."

DVLA sauce.

While the police would know you have a valid licence how do they know you?

In other words: worth carrying some alternative ID like a passport if you have one.

Yes, if you're surrounded by friends with camera phones by all means score some political points. Bit of a waste of everyone's time if you're just heading to work Rolling Eyes

Funny how your license records can be checked in a police car but not in a DVLA office.

But then again, the DVLA have recently shown themselves to be fairly arbitrary in what they do & don't ask for.

I was having a bad month in the 80s and had to write to one court in Kent (crossing double white lines)to tell them I couldn't send my licence because it was at another court in London (speeding).

Did I dream it or did they write the endorsement on the licence in biro. I must have imagined that.

Nope, I've had them written in biro in times gone by.

You didn't imagine it. I had an endorsement back in the 90s that came back hand-written in biro.

if you're concerned about losing entitlements while your licence is away you can check what records they have for you here:-
