I think you're worrying too much. As you said bike are not normally in these parts, so the 'haul it into a van' brigade are unlikely to be operating there. They like repeat sightings I believe.
In all likelihood it's only going to be unattended for a a couple of hours, right? Or look for a sturdy tree.. ____________________ Now: A100, SRX250, XJ598, FZ750, SL1000

This, you could probably leave the keys in nine times out of ten. Steering lock would do for me. |
I use a disc lock when I park up for walks in the Lake District, cable-lock my bike kit to the bike. As long as you're a good distance from major towns, I don't think bike thieves are much of an issue in such areas. ____________________ Chickenystripgeezer's Biking Life (Latest update 19/10/18) Belgium, France, Italy, Austria tour 2016 Picos de Europa, Pyrenees and French Alps tour 2017 Scotland Trip 1, now with BONUS FEATURE edit, 5/10/19, on page 2 Scotland Trip 2 Luxembourg, Black Forest, Switzerland, Vosges Trip 2017

Peak District is a well known climbing mecca. Top gritstone climbing or some such? Many top British climbers of the past have cut their climbing teeth there, among other spots. ____________________ Chickenystripgeezer's Biking Life (Latest update 19/10/18) Belgium, France, Italy, Austria tour 2016 Picos de Europa, Pyrenees and French Alps tour 2017 Scotland Trip 1, now with BONUS FEATURE edit, 5/10/19, on page 2 Scotland Trip 2 Luxembourg, Black Forest, Switzerland, Vosges Trip 2017

I do . . . I'd be doing very well to get the clobber needed for that on any motorcycle though; when two of us go winter climbing it fills the boot of my Forester and weighs about 100kg!

Yeah I can imagine; I reckon I can wear lightweight shorts under my biking trousers so no need to carry a change, plus fitting boots, harness, belay device, screwgate and lid into my luggage should be just about possible (I manage in winter going to the climbing wall, it's just the lid that's extra and although bulky it's very light so I reckon I can strap it to the outside). I'll let the car drivers take the rope and rack

It certainly is; some fantastic grit but don't forget the limestone of the white peak either, some great routes there too. Massive density of climbing venues in a relatively small area and I'm fortunate that most of them are less than 45 minutes ride from my house. ____________________ TG. |

Sorry, you're just talking to an armchair climber/mountaineer here
Will be a climber in the next life, perhaps - definitely something I missed out on ____________________ Chickenystripgeezer's Biking Life (Latest update 19/10/18) Belgium, France, Italy, Austria tour 2016 Picos de Europa, Pyrenees and French Alps tour 2017 Scotland Trip 1, now with BONUS FEATURE edit, 5/10/19, on page 2 Scotland Trip 2 Luxembourg, Black Forest, Switzerland, Vosges Trip 2017

I've parked up at wrynose and hardknott passes and gone for a wander for a few hours a couple of time, with my bike just locked front wheel round forks, but tbh I was a bit nervy about it all the same |
I don't think you need to be. I really don't think these places are frequented by bike thieves, and it's not as if your parking habits will be regular - wouldn't be worth their while going up there on the off-chance. More likely to suffer from vandalism, and even that is a remote risk I think. Parking on the main roads might be another matter.
Lake District crime tends to be more about breaking into cars for valuables and stealing from camp sites. I imagine it would be similar in the Peak District. ____________________ Chickenystripgeezer's Biking Life (Latest update 19/10/18) Belgium, France, Italy, Austria tour 2016 Picos de Europa, Pyrenees and French Alps tour 2017 Scotland Trip 1, now with BONUS FEATURE edit, 5/10/19, on page 2 Scotland Trip 2 Luxembourg, Black Forest, Switzerland, Vosges Trip 2017
