I need to stick some velcro pads in the back of my car, and the manufacturer advises the use of "Autoglym Intensive Tar Remover" first. mainly to remove any traces of silicone from cleaners etc.

Does anyone know what's in this stuff? Or of not, what solvent specifically will do the necessary without melting the plastic of my car? I've already got white spirit, IPA, petrol, acetone, paraffin, meths... do I need a bottle of this this stuff too?

I found the manufacturer's public data sheets etc, but they are very non-committal and unrevealing...

Too many variables to say for certain. What plastic, what paint? As you say, the material safety data sheet (MSDS) is a bit vague. Even then, it states that it has between 5-20% xylene which is likely to attack a range of plastics. Autoglym Intensive Tar Remover is £7 in Halfords. Put your hand in your pocket. Laughing What are the Velcro pads for anyway?

https://www.autoglym.com/pub/media/pdfs/INTENSIVE-TAR-REMOVER.pdf

Naptha, xylene,3-butoxypropan-2-ol, amine alkyl benzene sulphonate.

It depends on what your plastic will stand. I'd go petrol or "universal thinners", mesel'.

I'd try the white spirit first.
It might leave a white powdery residue, but you can wipe that off with some kitchen roll.

Used it on my car once when it had loads of tar lines appear. Very effective and did not damage. I didn't leave it though - wipe on, wash off immediately.

IPA should do the job (50:50 mix with water) it's what you should use before applying vinyl wrap, so should be perfect for your sticky backed velcro

Just test it in an inconspicuous place first if you are worried

I use it on all sorts of surfaces, car/bike paint, bare plastics, metal etc, never had any reaction out of it

White spirit is pretty good for this sort of thing. As said above, wipe off the residue after and you should be good to go

It's snake oil.

Better to use paraffin. Cheaper than chips.

You can also use some brake cleaner.

You ultimately want to remove grease, oil and waxes/polish.

Spray on a bit of clean rag and wipe the bit you want to clean.

I won't kill any kittens unless you can force them to drink it.

Actually I ended up following the first responder's address to stop being a cheapskate and just buy the Autoglym stuff, to be safe (a couple of weeks ago now).

Didn't melt the car, but the velcro pads still didn't fucking stick either...

Coz the autoglym is paraffin in an expensive container. 🤣
I think it has to be used then the vehicle washed.

I'd use IPA. Because properties. It will remove oils but mix with water.

Should've bought 3M branded pads. I have a wooden mast foot held into my vinyl canoe with dualock pads. It'll take a 20sq ft sail doing 12 knots without moving, while immersed in water.
