£20 tax £300 insurance on the car
£90 tax £150 insurance on the bike. I know which is the better deal.

Or £1.87 a week. To coin a phrase... Steady now... Rolling Eyes

You can't even get half a lager in a typical pub for that.

I spend more than that on pay and display car parks in a typical week and it's only 40p to park for two hours round here.

Free for bikes btw.

What car that has £20 tax has the performance of a bike? Especially one over 600cc?

My car costs £260 to tax, in fact I have a feeling it's gone up to £300...

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

Total running costs of a bike are still feck all though.

GSXR 1000 and a ZZR600 combined Tax and insurance (total £310-ish) cost me significantly less per year than the 2000 1.6 8V shitbox Clio I use to commute (£265 tax, 400-ish insurance).

Wifes car is £20 a year tax which seems great but it costs £30 for a decent headlight bulb (each) and I can eat a half pound burger quicker than it gets to 60MPH (Toyota IQ).

£ to performance the bikes are a bargain. £ to total running costs assuming you can turn a spanner for basic servicing most bikes are a bargain.

Thing that gets me is all the bike makers keep slowly upping the CC on bikes for emmissiobollocks reasons or whatever, but the tax brackets for bikes never change. So many commuter bikes are topping 600CC now.

Imho the brackets need to be shifted, i'd put the top one at over 1000 then 0-150, 150-400, 400-600 and 600-1000 with reductions in price for all bikes sub 1000.

Except what would actually happen is they'd probably introduce the 1000 bracket as a new higher rate at £120 or something Rolling Eyes

I just noticed this a few minutes ago when I went to do my renewal. Reminder said £88 and I was telling the Mrs how good it was that bike tax had risen slowly in comparison to cars (though I paid £30 a year for my 15 year old diesel runabout) - then when I go to pay, find the bastards have put it up again.

There's no excuse, really, so it pisses me off. The car I tax for £30 does a lot more damage and pollution than my bike ever will, so this is just money raising tax - not a justified, fair system.

Improve the extremely shitty roads (and footpaths, for that matter) where I live and ride and I may be more content - as it is, I'm not.

For whatever reason, bikes still aren't taxed on emissions, but on the old style capacity rules that cars pre 2001 were. This is the problem and if bikes were taxed on emissions the capacity would become less relevant. My 13 year old relatively dirty 500cc commuter twin averages significantly less mpg than my 900cc Bonneville does, yet the latter (despite being EURO4) is significantly more to tax.

Either way, it's still far from outrageous and in the scheme of things what other vehicles could you tax for £90 that'd do 60mph in less than 3 seconds (I'm clearly not talking about my bikes here Embarassed ).

I might replace my CB500X with a Tiger Explorer. Decat and straight through can.

That'll send Citizen Khan (or Khant) into a self fisting fuck frenzy of butt-hurt.

But oh wait! ANPR cant catch anything that's been modified! Knee jerk reaction to a problem that is far more complex than any of our politicians!

My 1.3l 200mph motorbike is less to tax than my 1.1l 80mph car.

It carries less people, does less mpg and probably chucks out moar carbons.

Quite simply you can do a lot less damage with a bike than a car.
