So Dakar is the capital of Senegal, West Africa.

It was in Peru last time round, moved due to security concerns in the Western Sahara. There were difficulties planning the route for last year because it was the first time it's taken place in a single country. Bolivia and Chile were supposed to be involved but they withdrew, at least in part due to the large fees the government must pay to the Dakar organisers for them to run it in their countries.
