I'm a bit surprised to see this come up again and disappointed that I didn't follow it up, as I hate it when other people do that.
As it turned out, a second application of HCl did the trick, but the real problem was the incompetent half wits who refurbed the bathroom.
When they redid the plumbing from the sink to the main waste pipe, they put in a very shallow angle where it ran under the bath, almost flat in fact; I questioned it at the time and was assured it would be OK.
What was happening was, because of the shallowness of that angle, the water was moving extremely slowly along it's longest run, allowing contaminants to build up and, eventually, blocking the pipe.
Anyway, I left that property about 3 months after this thread, so now it's someone else's problem. ____________________ Things get better with age; I'm close to being magnificent........

I have a plunger that is like a big bicycle tire pump. You can fill it with water put it over the plug and blast it through, it's always worked well for me. ____________________ Well, you know what they say. If you want to save the world, you have to push a few old ladies down the stairs.
Skudd:- Perhaps she just thinks you are a window licker and is being nice just in case she becomes another Jill Dando.
WANTED:- Fujinon (Fuji) M42 (Screw on) lenses, let me know if you have anything. |

I also have a slow draining wash hand basin in the bathroom and now I am worried that I might put the wrong stuff down and gas myself.
Can someone please explain the mustard gas thing in words of one syllable, please.
What should/shouldn't I use.
In the past the number 1 chaperone has attempted to clear it (over a year ago), he reckons he's had the trap off, but that he is going to have to cut the pipe (or something ...? I dunno). He's been too busy elsewhere lately and so I just avoid really using it very much. I wash my face in the shower and spit my tooth cleaning goo in the toilet and flush. So I really only use it to wash my hands, and then it takes about 10 minutes to empty.
Its quite annoying. ____________________ Not nearly as interesting in real life. |

Mustard gas is a complex man made compound.
Rotting material in drains can produce H2S Hydrogen Sulphide.
Smells like rotten eggs. In low concentration. If high enough concentration is blocks olfactory sense. So you cannot smell it.
It will kill you in one sniff if strong enough. Paralysis of respiratory system and then death.
Damp Gas, Stink Gas. Are some of the names for it.
Sulphuric acid will gas off sulphur compounds. If mixed with hydrogen you get H2S.
A blocked drain went harm you but adding strong chemicals that gas off toxins can.
A slow drain will respond to either sulphuric acid or caustic soda draino compounds. One is as good as the other.
But the sulphur is stinky winky and will be a problem for respiration in a confined space. I use a respirator whenever I use the sulphur type. It is so bad that the compound we use comes with a deodouriser too. Smells like roses. ____________________ Disclaimer: The comments above may be predicted text and not necessarily the opinion of MCN. |
