Well me and my old man went to the Forum 28 in barrow in furness to sit through a talk about the new 'ish' triumph rocket 3 (2300cc)
Because its 2300cc, the new triumph rocket III is the largest production motorcycle in existence. And, producing a claimed 140 horsepower and a Herculean 147 lb-ft of torque, the Rocket is most powerful cruiser yet, they call it a "power cruiser" its shaft driven and is restricted to 130mph, listening to this talk really made me think about how much effort the guys at triumph put into the bike, not only this one but the Thruxton newer version of the old banties and the sprint.
The guys there claim that triumph are "back and bad" personly i think this is triumph's last attempt to come out of the wood work, i could be wrong.
Very nice bike in all but wouldnt like one as a main bike, maybe a seasonal biker would suit this more.

what are your views?

Steve.

I don't think triumph are "back", I never seen them as away. I lvoe their bikes, always have done. Would prefer to own one more than a japanese if they happened to make a bandit priced naked 600 Very Happy

I guess the rocket 3 was just a marketing gimmick to get the "largest cc motorcycle in existence" badge. And who can blame them. Wouldn't own one myself but it's cool that it exists Very Happy

The thing is thats in a similar state of tune to a cb500 (like not tuned for mega power more for mellow steady reliable e.t.c.) so the actual potential is terrorfying! not to mention turbos and other such madness

From a fairly reliable source they are part way through a new super sportsbike thats going to be a bit of a monster too....

I saw the rocket 3 raced against a zx12, over a 1/4mile, didnt lose by much, considering how un-tuned it is, stick one in a tuning place and watch it make 500BHP+ with a turbo and stuffffffff.

With a 2.3 Litre Engine, 1000cc more then a busa surely 500Bhp can be made with tuning?

The thing is, the Rocket 3 is SO wide, and because of the upright seating position, It will be hard to get mega speed out of it anyway as the rider will be hanging on for dear life.

My dads mate (Shaun H) was telling me about his test ride on the Rocket. he said he was cruising down the motorway at 80, Wanted to overtake, He said he just droped it down 1, And opened it up. Apparently it was just like riding his R1 but in a different seating position Laughing
he said the torque is amazing.

I personally think they are overly big, But then again, If you have the money spair, Why not have one. Infact, Make it two! Cool and teach the missus...

You can get 985bhp out of a 2litre engine so i reckon that can be done.

Here's to Triumph. I'm 100% behind them in their effort to become one of the heavy hitters in the global biking market. Indeed, the Rocket 3 and the new Sprint ST are quite impressive. I've personally seen three Rocket 3's cruising about the foothills, elbow to elbow with the more traditional Harley-riders. Doesn't seem out of place at all and most people seem to get a kick out of the R3 more than anything else. Truth be told, I'm still not a fan of the Daytona, 650cc or not. Neutral

As far as the R3 being the largest displacement production motorcycle, I believe that title belongs to the Harley Davidson 'Boss Hoss'. At 5,700cc and over half a ton, it is in fact the largest production cycle to date. If 385bhp and 390ft.-lbs. isn't impressive/disturbing, I don't know what is. And please, no one mention that V-10 powered monstrosity of a show bike that Dodge came up with a couple years back...

Haven't made my mind up about the Rocket. It looks a bit lop sided and the motor just looks like a fookin huge breeze block. I'd like to see someone get it up Hartside through the hairpins because it looks like anything more than a 2 degree lean will have metal scrapping everywhere so the only way to take a tight corner is very slowly and I don't think these things will be stable at slow speeds.

No the other hand I always wondered what it would be like to have an American style cruiser that actually goes some. What's the point of having all them cubes if they only make 60 bhp. Bet they sell like hot cakes in the States coz Triumph are considered an acceptable alternative make to Harley by the wanabe Hells Angels over there.

It's big, bold, brash and pointless but thats what makes it great at the same time! Not my cup of tea but it's still a nice bike. Thumbs Up

There was a Triumph Rocket 3 at Box hill not so long ago, the guy who owned let me sit on it. It was f**king heavy, I could barely get it off the stand.

We went for a ride down the A24 and the way this guy rode it, he wasn't having much difficulty keeping up with my busa. We got to the traffic lights a bit further down the A24. We did a bit of a drag race from the lights, he left me for dead upto about 80mph.

Nice bike, just a little too big for me.

I wouldn't like to come across deisel on the road while taking a corner and as it's a massive 2300cc engine as it will probably crush your leg if you're pinned under the bike, not unless you stand about 6' 5'' tall or more and have enough strength to move it off your leg.

hmmm that reminds me

I was offered a test ride on one last year, muct go back to Webbs in Lincoln and see if they still have the demo

thing is, I don't think it will ever make huge power

it's a 3 cylinder remember so that's 3 HUUUUUUUGE pistons to slam backwards and forwards at high rpm and it is rpm that makes power

985 bhp from a 2 litre F1 engine is a 10 or 12 cylinder engine, a completely different, mentally high revving engine made possible because of small, light moving parts.

however, it would still be interesting to put a low pressure turbo or supercharger on one to up the torque a bit and use it for 1/4s

no doubt we'll see one soon Cool

I saw this one when I was riding around California last year. I think I would have one if I lived there, but not here in the UK.

Wrong Wrong Wrong. Brimming over with wrongability. So wrong, you could beat a man in a wrong contest even if he turned up to the wrong venue in the wrong town in the wrong country.

Triumph have got at least two and perhaps three more show stoppers up their sleeve. (if you don't count the new speed triple). First and most exitingly, they are going to replace the 600/650 Daytona with a 680cc Triple. This bike will have an underseat exhaust, radial brake calipers and USD forks.
It will have a class leading wet weight, and make around 100bhp. It will be considered in the same vein as a Ducati 748 and the Jap 600's for the purposes of supersport racing. And I want one! Very Happy

Secondly, they have a 955i daytona replacement on the cards. Details are a *little* more sketchy, but it is certainly likely to be less radical than the 680 triple. It sounds like its going on a diet and a makeover, and will have the 1050cc engine that is in the Sprint ST and the new Speed Triple. It won't be a world beater, but it will be nice to ride.

And Thirdly, Triumph have spent millions of pounds developing a 1200cc four cylinder blackbird-esque bike. The word is it has been cancelled for a number of reasons, one of which being the competition from the new freaky BMW. The main reason however, is that John Bloor is a good friend of Crony Tony, and so does not want to be seen to be releasing a speed limit obliterating 200mph bike (which was the design brief). This would be very bad press for our grinning poodle friend.

Oh and there is always a possibility of a 1050cc tiger too! Smile

You'll find that Boss Hoss as a company are in no way related to Harley Davidson. They make one off special bikes and so are not considered 'production' as such.

Besides, Boss Hoss do a 606 cubic inch bike as well, meaning about 10 litres churning out 640 HP and god knows how much torque it also weighs a good 1300lbs Shocked so it has a power to weight ratio of about 900 HP. Kinda making the 2300 triumph look a bit tiny. Boss Hoss is a production bike, they have a model list and a price range. Just because each one is ready customised doesn't mean it isn't a production bike. For real speed freaks they are currently trying out a 350 supercharged prototype. Automatic transmission and 1/4 mile in 10.4 seconds for the 'small' one the zx12 completes it in 9.99.

Just found: Very Happy
Quote:
The model Levi is inspecting goes for a shade under $50,000. It’s got a 502-cubic inch Chevrolet engine that, coincidentally, develops 502 horsepower. Not enough? Try the 606-cubic inch model, with a Donovan custom block, but bring about $100,000. (It’s $95,000 plus tax.) That bike will get you to 60 mph in a shade over 2 seconds. A quarter mile will take you 8.8 seconds from a dead stop, and you’ll be going 156 mph when you get there. Top speed is way over 200 mph, which, if you do it in a construction zone, will cost you even more than the bike.

Given some of the figures there I would take that with a very large pinch of salt. 2 seconds to 60 is quite a lot better than 1g acceleration, and you only have 1g downward force to provide you with the grip for that acceleration. Sure it is possible to get better than 1g, but not easy esepcially by that amount. Top speed has not got a hope in hell of being over 200mph with the aerodynamics of a but, let alone something rather worse than a brick.

All the best

Keith
