Hi folks, like it says on the tin - what do you think is the best riding gear for the Alps in August? Best to stick to a well vented adventure-style suit with waterproof liners or will perforated two-piece leathers and a waterproof oversuit cut it?
Will be riding a sports-tourer, none of the party are particularly speed demons. Covering French, Swiss and Austrian Alps for nine days, never been before. Very Happy

You need flexibility, I'd go for leather with waterproofs over.
It will potentially be 35C plus in the valleys, higher up it could easily be near freezing, brief snow cover is possible in any month.
Even the nicest looking day you can get into major thunderstorms the other side of the slope. Or just have 2 or 3 plain miserable wet days with low cloud and sleet over the passes.

+1 for leathers and carrying an oversuit.

Get hold of some wicking baselayers and you won't be miserable with sweat either.

Agreed, I just went to France and had summer leathers and a one piece waterproof. Pissed it down getting to Portsmouth so the waterproof was a godsend. Weather was great in France so was elated I had summer leathers with decent base layers.

Cheers folks, looks like the leathers have it. Would you suggest full length wicking baselayers or shorts and short sleeves? Wondering if longs will be hot.

Holy shit.
Sounds like a sweatbox nightmare.

I'd just like to add my usual iconoclastic twopence for "trackie bottoms, trainers, t-shirt and denim cut-off, with a waterproof jacket in the rucksack"

But No shorts and flip flops.

having driven through a hailstorm in france which killed 6 people... I'd probably advise against this outfit for actually riding the bike.

Long-distance needs proper planning.

I would wear textiles if possible if I was you and scared of inclement weather.

We did Nurburg Ring in July hot AF from N'Castle to Nurburg. But my textile gear was fine. We got a wee soaking as we got into Nurburg but all dried off by morning.

I always carry spare gloves and a neck protector for when we get off for snacks, coffee/pish. Wet neck protectors are shite.

I prefer textiles, especially for long tours. Especially textiles with interchangeable liners. My current jacket has a mesh-panelled outer, a removable wind-and-waterproof liner, and a removable thermal liner. Covers every base.

Wearing such a jacket, I can park the bike up at places of interest, take it off, and go for a wander unburdened.
