I've just joined, read a few posts about driving courses & booked an Advanced course with IAM.
I completed a 3 day course at the start of April, passed my mod 1 and 2 but needed to buy a new car as my Volvo was rapidly approaching 225,000 miles & starting to moan about it
Finally bought a Yamaha FJR1300 on Saturday 27th.
10 minutes later I was on the motorway in 80 - 90mph winds (Storm Hannah) & did the 155 mile trip back home. That was a mixture of exciting & terrifying lol.

Glad to finally be a part of the biking community so thought I would say hello.

Welcome to the family Smile
That's quite a trip for a first outing. Had to any experience before you did your courses?
I've been riding a 125 for about 6 months everyday to work and have my mod 1&2 booked in for the start of June.

I had a 50CC Gilera DNA for about a year about 18 years ago. That was a twist & go though so the first time I sat on a manual bike was on my CBT before the 3 day course.

I told the instructor I was planning on booking a 4 or 5 day course but he said I would be OK with 3 days. He was right 😁
Saved me a couple of hundred pounds.

Loving the bike so far. Can't believe my insurance was only £277 on a 1300CC for my first bike.
I've spent almost 3 times that amount on equipment since getting it lol.

My gloves came today so riding will feel much safer.
Just waiting for the Disc Lock & Chain to arrive & I'm pretty much set 👍

Fuck me you don't hang about.

Nice work!

Welcome. How are you finding the 1300?

I'm loving it mate. Was a bit worried the power would take me by surprise but they only do what you tell them to.
On the way back from riding it I took a corner a bit faster than I should have done & ended up drifting from the fast lane to the slow lane on the motorway. I now know I easily could have made it but didn't lean enough.
I'm getting my knee down lower everyday now though & have learned the approximate speed for certain corners.

Just need to get used to estimating speed without having to look at the speedometer. I thought I was doing around 90mph on the motorway the other day but was doing, ahem, quite a bit more than that 😂
It's like being strapped to a rocket.

I'm still happy filtering at around 10mph though. It saves me a good 15 minutes on the way to work.

Just had 3... THREE! sets of roadworks simultaneously appear on my route in the last few days.

Cue maniacal laugh as a bypass all that silliness pausing only to avoid random U-turners.

15 minutes - changing time is barely worth the save Very Happy

Personally I love being on the bike, whether it's quicker or slower than the car isn't relevant.

Congrats on finding biking properly for the 2nd time.

Roadworks, ahh yes I remember those 😂

It doesn't take me long to get changed & I work in a freezer so just come in my work gear. Saves me changing when I arrive 😁

Ha so on hot days you leave chilled and 10 minutes after arriving are also chilled.

Sounds good!

Been -22° & -28° is a bit more chill than I'm happy with but the manager keeps ignoring my suggestion to get some heaters in there.

Luckily, I heard tonight that I've been accepted for a new job I applied for so no more freezer for me in a week or so, better pay too 😁
Can't wait.

Welcome.

I knew a lad who got a job in a freezer - he was sacked after a week. He really liked ice cream and kept eating the raspberry ripple!!

Seriously? 😂
Sounds like a blind guy I knew who became a vasectomy doctor.
He got the sack too.
I'm handing in my notice tonight. I tried to tonight but they're stalling.
I'm going to have to work both jobs for a few days which will be tiring. Worth it though.

Absolutely true story that. He also had one lung following a childhood accident. He was a smoker.

I'm sure we've all done something similar. Panic reaction is to lock your arms up and look at the danger so your bike follows where you're looking. If that fear starts to happen again try to pay attention to where you're looking and relax your arms.. could save your life.

It didn't help that I drove it back in Storm Hannah. First time on a bike since passing my test a few weeks previously & I was suddenly doing 155 miles in 80 - 90mph winds.
I was unsure how far I could lean it so was staying fairly upright.
I'm getting the hang of it now. Next order of business is to get the missus a helmet & try taking a pillion 😁

Just showing respect to fellow bikers out on the road. I tip my head to say hello as I drive by them. I think Americans hold 2 fingers downwards but I prefer having my hands on the controls.

Don't nod to anyone, and they won't do it to you.

I nod to anybody on two wheels with an engine. Scooter riders are just people that haven't fully made their mind up yet. Or perhaps young riders that can't afford insurance on a proper bike.

How do you nod? Is there a proper way of doing it?

I don't think so, as long as I'm looking towards them & tilt my head they usually do it back.

^^^Possibly the most underrated question asked. Thumbs Up

I too want the definitive answer.

I personally just look at their helmet & tip my head down once when they're looking. The other rider usually does the same thing.
You're not going to look stupid as we aren't the ones waiting in traffic with no sense of community 😁
