Do you think parliament has a great big stadium where 60 million people are supposed to go and watch every week? If so, yes it would be best to have it in London. But no, that's not how it works. Have a look again at that map I just showed you. Take all the time you need. Hint: Large bold font won't help. |
You still think Westminster is solely populated by 650 MP's from all over the country and that this makes up the entirety of the UK, London based government and parliament. What about all the embassies, will they be OK in Oldham and Scarborough? Where do all the Lords live? How about Westinster staff? Security staff?
How about the close ties with M15, MI6? Maybe in the event of an emergency, they can hop on a train to Manchester?

Don't be so daft. You think every MP is assigned a hectic government minister role that requires them to be in London every other week? Seriously?
Their job is to represent their constituents, in the constituency they were voted.
And MI5??
Shifting parliament elsewhere would not mean that the entire secret or civil service would have to go too. |

Once again proving your ten-year-old level of comprehension skills.
MPs need to be in parliament regularly. Parliament does not need to be in London.
MPs do not need to be rubbing shoulders with MI5, MI6 and the civil service. Those can all stay in London for all I care.
This is not hard to understand. |

Easy-peasy...
If you centralise things: more efficient with less travel but single point of failure.
If you distribute things: less efficient with more travel but difficult to destroy the system.
Like it or not dropping a nuke on London pretty much cripples the whole of the UK but spreading everything out just slows things down. TBH with a good communications system this should be less of a problem.
The Roman Empire lasted over a thousand years just with men on horseback relaying messages. Think of what they could have done with broadband! Or even the "Clacks" from the Discworld novels ____________________ Husqvarna Vitpilen 401, Yamaha XSR700, Honda Rebel, Yamaha DT175, Suzuki SV650 (loan) Fazer 600, Keeway Superlight 125, 50cc turd scooter |

Moving Parliament and Government north is not just an issue of practicalities. It would have a massive positive psychological effect. It would cost a fortune no doubt but it would bring balance into society and reduce division. |

The institutions around Parliament need to move. So the departments yes, but also lobbyists and think tanks and media. It could all be spread around the country. Maybe we could have two Parliaments, then the Lords and Commons switch over every year.
Also the problem with moving the Parliament to the population weighted centre is that puts it about 20 miles north of Oxford. That will really set people in the north off

London is only about 15% of the population. |
