A long shot but anyway here goes...

My nephew's about to turn 18 and I want to get him something. He's very keen on photography (just done an A-level and hopes to do a uni course in it). Ideally I'd like to get something related to that, but what?

I'm told he's already got a Canon EOS 1300D 58mm, 15-55mm and 55-250mm zoom lenses, and a tripod. His main interest seems to be photographing cars (stationary/moving, but not racing cars as such). Not sure of my budget yet, but ertainly in two figures rather than three.

Any ideas, please?

Second hand Sigma lens, or some filters, remote shutter, spare battery packs, memory cards. Endless possibilities.

A reasonable quality tripod or monopod is something would be useful for many years and around £50 is feasible.
They do need a head which is somewhat personal preference, for panning to follow cars a video type head with two handles rather than ball type would be best.

I think the posed shots in car and bike mags tend to use additional lighting so maybe try Googling "outdoor photography lights"? Setting them up would be quite a committment which might not appeal. Just one idea anyhow.

Yes that's a good one, rechargeable LED tube type, you can use for light painting long exposures too.

If you were thinking of a tripod then I can recommend Redsnapper. They're superb quality and not that expensive - the one I've linked below has a removable leg that can be used as a monopod - two for the price of one. Thumbs Up

Hire a *ahem* glamour model for an hour. He should be able to take enough pictures in that time to keep the old wank-bank in credit well into his thirties. It would the be the present that keeps on giving.

What about a Speedlight?
I use a fake one and it's very good. Damned cheap too.

What is the 58mm? Did you mean a 50mm lens or is this the 58mm lens cap diameter of the 15-55mm?

A nice fast prime lens would be nice - a 50mm f/1.8 for example (a f/1.4 would be nicer, but £££). I use my 50mm most of the time, despite having a bagful of zoom lenses.

Love photography.

How about a Joby JB01505-BWW GorillaPod 325 Tripod.
Find it on Amazon.
And throw in a Canon 2469A002 Remote Switch RS-60.
These two will allow him to get long exposures and steady zoom shots.

And tell him Bikes are way more interesting to photograph than cars... ;-D

Tag along session with an established photographer. Some guys do a session where you take your own kit and try some stuff that the 'pro' does. Broadens horizons quickly.

Any gear you get for him will be your idea, not his and he might want something like, but not exactly what you got for him. Let him worry about kit.

IF he photographing cars, get him a polarizing filter for one of his lenses.

He will need ti to remove the glare from bodywork and the glass and helps get richer colours.

Thanks very much for all these really helpful suggestions - I've gone with a monopod and a fake Speedlite!

I was very tempted with the 'hot model' idea - he's a bit of a shy lad though and I think that would have completely freaked him out Laughing

You already got something, I was going to suggest some vouchers for high quality printing.

Amazing how we take loads of pictures then never print them. There is a whole other layer to photography in chosing output, media type, colour setup and mounting.

That's a good one too.
I use a local small printing firm for mine. They can do everything in house.
I buy big old frames from household clearance places but specifically old hotel picture frames. The glass is often anti-glare. My printing shop replace inner borders to custom specs - size, thickness, colour etc and print to my needs.
I actually gain a discount by offering some images for their own use. They print and frame and sell via their counter to other customers from which they make a small profit and their shop looks better!
