No they must have opened it up to repair it and noticed it wasnt the standard stuff. This was straight through MSI though as I bought it second hand and managed to convince them I bought it new and the shop wouldnt take it back. I guess it may not usually matter if the retailer will just do a swap/ refund since they wont look.

So, more days have passed, the paste now stabilised, if that is a thing.

With the fan speed on auto, I get 76°C @ 1700 rpm, which is 2°C and 500 rpm lower, than it used to be. If I force the fan to run at 2000 rpm, I get 72°C and when I force it to run at 2200 rpm which was common rpm before the paste replacement, I can get sub 70°C.

Long story short, the paste works (no throttling) and I'll leave it there (not gonna buy any ''better'' paste). Maybe the heatsink wasn't just seated properly from the factory.
