Hi, can any one help identifying this starter motor? Either looking for a replacement, reconditioning it/or another recon unit, or aftermarket one.
Its off my MZ 500 S S Classic, looking for peace of mind to getting it working properly, atm its a little temperamental but does work, could be one of those things where it will either keep doing it and wont fail, or at some point it will lol. I have tried googling the make and numbers but so far come up with nothing, if any one has suggestions i`d be grateful Razz .

Yep!

I've had a couple of Starter motors repaired in the past by my Mechanic, cheaper than a new replacement.

Hi, that would be a last resort, I don't want to remove it yet untill I have a confirmed replacement or repair,. Just being cautious,. I have removed parts in the past and ended up regretting as either the part broke and couldn't get a replacement and had to wait, or jury rig up someting. I have sent an email to a to a parts replacement distributer see if they have an alternate,. Also received an email from force motorcycles, he's said may have a new or used part, just have to wait till he checks stock. So may have a little luck

No, seems an out of date number,. Nothing in their catalog of redundant parts,. I have emailed a supplier if there is an alternate to those numbers

Advice from abroad?

https://www.mzriders.com/viewtopic.php?f=26&t=5345 (2011!) says:

"As far as the starter goes, they use a Nippon Denso 128000-8840. There are a lot of them on ebay for around $80. You won't find them listed under that part number though, just search rotax starter (I think they're also used on John Deere light tractors). What makes you think the starter is bad? The starters are pretty good and if the starting system isn't working chances are pretty good it's the clutch sprag, not the starter. This site has _fantastic_ instructions on fixing that (see https://www.mzriders.com/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=3939 and viewtopic.php?f=26&t=4014) and very knowledgable and helpful folks to help you figure out what the real issue is"

But it's over the pond from here....

More than likely it's just worn brushes and dirty commutator
I'd be having it out and apart before throwing money away.
brushes, bearings, oil seal easy enough to source.

I'm still using 40 year old motors that have only needed
a wash and brush up every now and again.
Intermittent action can also be due to shity wiring, switches and relays so throw money at it and swap and hope or test the fucker

Most towns will have an autoelectricial place. Unlike Halfords they will be on the back of an industrial estate somewhere, often a dirty looking grimy place. They will deal almost exclusively with ' the trade' and are just what you are looking for. They will happily re condition your starter, new bronze bushes, new brushes and a skimmed commutator and maybe even a coat of black paint. I paid 45 notes to get my obsolete Cagiva one done, it's like new now.

As said, it doesn't work, and repairing it is unlikely to be a difficult task, so you have nothing to lose by removing it and taking it apart.

If the perma-magnets are broken, which is unlikely, just junk the whole thing.

You will need to clean up the commutator to make all the bare copper shiny again (use wire wool or whatever it takes), remove all the dust from the inside, most likely replace the brushes, and preferably change the bearing.

The brushes are typically just a block of carbon (graphite?) on a bit of flexible matted copper. If you want to do this on the cheap, you can cut off your existing worn brushes at the point where the braided copper is soldered to the backing plate, buy generic car starter motor brushes from an auto parts shop, file them down with a metal file to a size where they will fit your starter motor, and solder the new copper braided ends to your backing plate where the old ones were. Then, knock out your old bearing, make a note of the number and order a new one online. Put it all back together with the new bearing and your clean commutator and backing plate with fresh brushes, and it should be fine.

This.
I'm not too sure now but in my neighbouring village an old fella would restore starters and alternators to exceptional standards in his garden shed workshop. He would undercut the price of refurbished units from motor factors. His turnaround was rapid and local car repairers swore by him.

I added a short mp4 on you tube, showing noise of motor, also sometimes although the motor runs it doesnt engage into the engine, a quick into 1st gear and rocking back and forward sometime engages the motor to start.

Bikes now all sorted, new sprag fitted,. Clutch leaver feels a little heavier, and had to slacken cable right off,. Changes gear nicely. The old one prity much fell apart when it was taken off, surprised it lasted as long as it did lol. Starter motor still makes a nasty noise on turning over, so a recon job be for the winter time Smile. I did get a price for a motor,. A new one was £300 and a used working order one was £150,. I'll see what shop at Peterborough will charge.
