CPU fan in my laptop broke (I've ordered a replacement fan), I'm still using it but I'm fully expecting it to die any time soon. and its about 6 years old though it still does everything I need.
anyhow I've been looking at replacements, and this seems to be a good shout

in short its all the following for £550
Lenovo v330
i7-8550u
8gb - max 20GB
256gb m2 PCIe SSD
radeon 530 2GB dedicated v Ram
I run linux, I sometimes play games (not the latest FPSs or anything more things like CIV and such like) I do Dev work and run some VMs, other then that its mostly internet browsing and email.
Ideally I'd like a bigger HDD but I could potentially buy a 512GB afterwards
So does anyone know of any better offers or better specced laptops for similar money ~£600 max ____________________ "The guy is a worthless cunt and I honestly believe I would be a slightly happier person if he died." - Chris-Red |

I have pretty much that exact laptop, but on a marginally lower spec. Mine has 0.2GHz less processor speed than the one you're looking at.
I'm a programmer and use my computer every day for work. I'll often have two or even three windows with Visual Studio open, and often leave projects running on debug mode while I start working on something else. The laptop has never run slow for me.
It seems to handle most games too, though I'm not a gamer and never attempt to really max the machine out.
The only thing that has ever slowed it down is Microsoft's bollocks automatic updates and other background processes which I had to weed out myself.
It also has a weird problem when connecting to a second screen via the VGA port. The touchpad will sometimes stop working and need to be reset (the touchpad, not the whole laptop - just need to press F6 twice). Dunno if it's a fault with my specific laptop or a fault with the entire range.
Another issue that happens to my laptop and my mate's laptop (also Lenovo) is a random screen freeze where it looks like the machine has completely locked up. Screen frozen, mouse is dead, keyboard unresponsive, the caps/num lock lights don't even change when you press those buttons. I used do a hard reset and lose all my work. Then we discovered the much better solution. Just close the lid, let the screen switch off, then reopen it again and the whole thing is back to life!
Having mentioned those two little problems, I'd like to make it clear that I still wholly recommended the laptop range you're looking at. I've never had a better machine. This thing is miles better than my old HP, which suffered from extreme overheating and had a jet engine for a fan.
I did a lot of research before buying this, and it seems Lenovo are the best at the moment for "good but lower budget" laptops. |
