As per title, I managed to remove the old one with ratchet straps, but putting a new one on is proving impossible and scares the life out of me when I need to release the bastards.

I took it to my local (car) garage and the mechanic had a go with his expensive professional car spring compressor but it was too large...

Does anyone know where I'd be best taking it to get done?

Guessing those are more suitable than these then?

Tried these but when fully closed it didn't compress the spring enough to get the collar on. Evil or Very Mad

I can't imagine you will have enough room to get car spring compressors in.

Those should be about 10cm in length, much better for the limited space.

I'm almost at the "fuck it" stage where irrational decisions/ purchases are made Laughing

I'll ring about some motorcycle shops then before I do, unless anyone has a set I can borrow???

The Sealey ones are spot on, used them half a dozen times no problem.

The "trick" is not to try and compress the spring any more than is needed. By that I mean back out the shock locknut to the top thread, unwind the preload to the locknut. Apply the spring compressors, but just give them 6-8 half turns either side to take the strain, then undo the locknut and preload nut completely so they come off the threads and rattle about. And let the spring with compressors attached drop down to its furthest point away from the bottom shock mount.
You might have to apply more compression either side, but chances are that is enough to remove the spacers at the bottom of the shock, then get at the locknut below the bottom mount etc

But once those spacers are removed, you can back out the spring compressors.

By giving the spring the most amount of room, it really doesn't need to be compressed too much, so you won't be sitting there sweating buckets thinking you are handling an unexploded bomb. And the time the spring is compressed is actually only 30 seconds or so.

I asked last night on a Facebook group if anyone had any I could borrow and had lots of offers which was surprising.

I had some car spring compressors that were too large, but someone suggested putting a bolt through the top mount of the shock to give the larger compressor tool more room and it worked perfectly. Very Happy

I'm a bit lost in the post, I'm no mechanic, I realise you need to compress car springs. However I've put on a Hagon or two over the years and I've never needed to do this on the bike.

Surely I'm doing something wrong/right. I do have a Abba, perhaps that's it.

I think DRZ4Hunned was asking about getting a spring on/off the shock. Not the shock on/off the bike.
So using spring compressors to get the spring off the shock while the shock is out the bike.

Like this.... So you can get the spring on and off the shock
