Tech geeks I use an HP laptop to read and post shite on here.

For a few months I have suspected that the adaptor is on it's road out.

I get normal use and speeds about 80% of the time.

Now and then it suffers some phaphery where I lose connection or get buffering.

I first noticed this when connected to company wifi.

The problem is not so bad when I connect to the same network using my phone.

I do not have a 5gb connection here in Atyrau at the house or at work and my laptop wifi doesn't see 5gb.

When I check the adaptor in control panel it all checks out.
The device is working properly.

I even got a usb wifi adaptor to play with that.

I want to know if there are any other checks to do.

It may be shite internet service where I connect too.

Yep , they do go tits up.
Look on the bottom of the laptop for a cover with a wireless motif on it, under the cover is the wireless card, I think you have to lift the hard drive off it's mount to access the card ,unplug a couple of wire connections and unplug the card ,it should have it's part number clearly shown on a sticker. Google a new item , I found my last one on fleabay.

Here's the next question.

Is it possible to get a Multi-Band card for a laptop?

My google is broken. Very Happy

That depends on the model

With HP laptops some of them have a list of cards that they'll support hardcoded into the bios.

It is possible to download a modified bios which has the list removed but there not available for all models.

I think they removed this restriction on later models (2016 on wards onwards i think)

You'd need to search for your exact model of laptop and see if anyone else has successfully transplanted a card.

Even if a card fits and even if the BIOS doesn't lock it out (Apple are notorious for that sort of thing too) it still might not work.

Having said that salvaged WiFi cards usually cost feck all so you could just get some random Intel, Broadcom, Realtek, Athos etc. that look like they might fit and just see what happens.

Alternatively, and this is a bit old-skool, does your laptop have an Ethernet port? Would help a lot when you try and wrestle in drivers for an unknown card.

Thinking about it, I have the original card from my laptop (hp g6) kicking about somewhere.

I'll see if I can dig it out over the weekend, if its any use to you, you can have it.

If you have a spare USB port, you can buy a USB network card up to and including wireless ac. you could then disable the existing one, either in the BIOS or in Windows.

The thing about this forum is the feedback is fcuking priceless.

Thanks to everyone who chipped in.

I bought a TP-Link Archer USB wifi stick a while ago and have connected via that at home where I have a good dual band router. I can get 5 and 2.4 gb no problemo.
I don't like to pay for internet as it's redundant 6mth of the year when I'm at work.
Di just bit the bullet and succumbed to a 24mth fiber deal.)

When I worked in Kazakhstan internet speed at the camp was 35mbps and upwards but I still got frequent/contuous drop-outs. Pain in the arse. Even though the speed was fast continuity of continuity of connection was shite.

I sometimes get a shite connection at home. I like to blame the traffic on the www like when the US come on pine and blame my cheap arse ISP.
And I know I have a rusty connection from the local exchange grey box at the end of the street.
Open Reach Engineers have checked and said it's fine. I know it's not. If my new fibre service doesn't.improve things then I'll cancel the contract and get some fucker to dig up the road.

Now when I'm in Saudi at work the Wi-Fi is censored and slow as shite.

I'm at the house in Kazakhstan now and service is perfect.

I think my laptop card is functioning fine. I ran some diagnostic on it yesterday and tried my USB adaptor and nothing changed.
It's most probably a hard wire connection issue I'm experiencing 100% out of my control.

I hate the internet. 😡 🤣
