It's back to the blues roots, having kicked off the morning working on a few Stevie Ray Vaughan licks (fingers still sore from yesterday!).

Then these:

https://img.discogs.com/mAK7tT1aC4mP-wdOnvHZEkyMn-Y=/fit-in/500x500/filters:strip_icc():format(jpeg):mode_rgb():quality(90)/discogs-images/R-10573126-1500150595-4929.jpeg.jpg

Time I got back to listening to full albums again, instead of huge mixed playlists.

The Chain by Fleetwood Mac,

Obviously I knew the bit at the end, but the whole song, especially the chorus is haunting. How had I not heard it before?

I've led a sheltered life Sad

You should be sheltered from any Fleetwood Mac that doesn't have Peter Green and Jeremy Spencer.

Now playing:

From Alligator Records, who were cool for the blues in the 80s:

I only came across him by accident recently. I was given a heap of LPs and as I do when this happens, I go through them to sort the ones I want, the ones for charity and the ones for landfill. His were on the 'charity' pile until I noticed the telecaster, and I thought I'd give one a spin.

Nice... Cool

Very few blues players got the intensity that Roy did. His was a sad story of alcoholism and eventually suicide in a jail cell*. Whatever was torturing him came out in his playing I think. Well worth checking out a couple of his performances on Youtube - he only really came into his own in live performance. I think most peoples' first reaction is, "WTF?!!" Laughing

*A lot of people think this claim by the police is suspect.

Not sticking slavishly to going through everything in alphabetical order, today's selection kicks off with:

https://img.discogs.com/tcAc2mcY91uByz2A7pT1sYUpQFo=/fit-in/600x587/filters:strip_icc():format(jpeg):mode_rgb():quality(90)/discogs-images/R-2596606-1311618274.jpeg.jpg

Buddy Guy was one of many artists to have his career revived by the phenomenon of Stevie Ray Vaughan - who rescued him personally from fixing cars or some such job; "you'll ruin those fingers man!" - and this was the first result for him, and a brilliant 'start'. In his earlier days he played and recorded with Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf and other such famous blues icons.

I saw Buddy play 2 or 3 times, once supported by Ronnie Earl - a brilliant night! He would do a walkabout through the audience, and he stopped right in front of me and played (seats in rows). My mate couldn't get over it after; "He stood and played for YOU!" Laughing
It might have been something to do with the fact that as he came level with us, I said something like, "C'mon Buddy, I wanna steal some licks!" Laughing

Buddy really knew how to engage his audience, even in a large theatre venue. One of those musicians whose music you really did 'feel' at a live gig. It was like he actually was playing for you alone, you just got lost in it. He put everything he had into every performance. A true artist and great representative for the blues.

Edit: Jeff Beck's solo at the end of "Mustang Sally"!

And the follow-up:

https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/EAAAAOSw6GBZcogN/s-l640.jpg

It's true that both these albums were helped a great deal by the collaborations with other artists - for one thing, I think it helped to keep the styles varied. But they would have been good even without that imo.
It says something that they were queueing up to play with him.

Bonnie Raitt's all-too-short slide guitar solo on the title track is just like a big sigh Cool

These are the two Buddy Guy albums that are must-haves in a good blues collection, for me anyway.

Edit: yes, this album is sheer craftsmanship. I don't think there's a note on it that's superfluous to requirement, but delivered with feeling throughout; nothing is overdone, and yet it has a 'fullness' that would be hard to beat. Styles and covers include influences from Muddy Waters to Stevie Wonder. Could be in my top ten albums of all time if I could be bothered to work it out.

Time to chill out to some acoustic blues Cool :

https://img.discogs.com/Md48IuBCR24AtpSuaA1UZDZ2gBo=/fit-in/600x600/filters:strip_icc():format(jpeg):mode_rgb():quality(90)/discogs-images/R-3262410-1479361565-7902.jpeg.jpg

This is my all-time favourite 'traditional' acoustic blues album I think, with influences like Charlie Patton, Leadbelly 'n' such. I always found those old original recordings somewhat inaccessible, we've come so far from that kind of sound these days, but Hart manages to capture the essence with a more modern-ear-friendly sound. Perhaps just largely down to more modern recording equipment. Guest appearances by Taj Mahal.

Think I've posted this before, but...
This done on a plugged-in semi-acoustic guitar, but a sweet little performance:

And now playing, the other end of the Alvin Hart scale, much more rock than blues:

https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/61HR4B6XM1L.jpg

As with Roy Buchanan, I've always found it hard to pin down his influences, aside from the more obvious ones in his straight blues playing. An artist with his own distinct sound, for sure, doing his own thing and never one to seek publicity.

Had to get it out of my system:

Diggs, I bet this is the album you had.

Now mellowing down (mostly) to this:

https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/51ni9tDCUeL.jpg

A little-known classic of instrumental blues with a tinge of jazz, and hints of Hendrix's ballad style, and a dose of Kenny Burrell. I picked this (as a CD years ago) out of a little specialist record store in some Soho backstreet, just blindly, having never heard of Ronnie Earl. Turned out to be a cracking choice.

A great track to kick the album off with:

Now up, another I picked out on that same record store visit:

https://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/61hP6-rMo4L.jpg

All I knew about Lonnie Mack at that time was that SRV constantly banged on about what a big influence on him he'd had, and that Stevie had covered Lonnie's "Wham!", a supercharged instrumental. I was surprised that back in the early 60s, Lonnie actually had been that wild when he wanted to be. And such a great soul singer too. He was once booked to play a black music radio station - all they knew about him was his music, and when he arrived, legend has it they said, "Baby, you's the wrong colour!" Laughing

Lonnie's original:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lv8TmAUA7Rw

Stevie barely veered from it on his cover at all.

And this, just a track I absolutely love:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7jOgRbm29BI

I came back with a handful of CDs from that visit, and I seem to remember I hit on a number of gems. When I got them home, I sparked up a nice J, and had my mind completely blown for several hours that evening Very Happy

Trying to remember what else I came back with on that trip. This was another:

https://img.discogs.com/UMjTcKGL69rho6EFFjjimflm7Bw=/fit-in/580x582/filters:strip_icc():format(jpeg):mode_rgb():quality(90)/discogs-images/R-3995922-1351769926-8409.jpeg.jpg

Great slide playing, really dynamic. Alas, the only Roy Rogers I can find on Youtube is the cowboy Laughing
I already had one album from him, so knew roughly what I was choosing with this.

Ah, just nothing from that album, but this'll give you an idea of what he's about:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vBXBg0iXGRU

Damn, a spliff would really go down a treat right now Laughing

First album of the day:

https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/518S6xjbTeL.jpg

This is the man that so powerfully influenced people like Eric Clapton and Peter Green back in the 60s when they were discovering blues on the guitar. If you go back to John Mayall's Bluesbreakers and Fleetwood Mac (the original, proper Fleetwood Mac, not the commercial, pretend one that most people think of!), you can clearly hear it in their guitar work.

This is a favourite of mine from this album - not so much a blues track, more rock, but Freddie's guitar is still the same kind of feel:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V_ONyukSLqA

It sounds so simple these days, but sometimes, with all the modern rock sounds, we get cluttered. There's no space, and in blues, the space is as important as the notes. It's about expression. And you can't just play the licks by rote. You have to put something into it to get something out. You literally do have to feel what you're playing. There really is an honesty required for blues to work. I mean, you can practice to get the technical part right, but the work isn't done when you get to that point where your bends hit the right note, you have a bit of a vibrato technique going on, you know which notes come next, which licks fit over which chords and changes - that's nuts and bolts, but they aren't the finished bike. The finished bike is the expression of the ride, what it all means when you use it.

Actually, I think Buddy Guy is a better example for this kind of thing. Buddy IS his music. You can't play like Buddy Guy, only Buddy can do that.

Nice little performance of two tracks from this album, but not with Stevie's usual band, Double Trouble (Chris Layton on drums, Tommy Shannon bass, Reece Wynans keyboards):

Every time Stevie played, you could see what he was putting into it.
The man that got me serious about learning to play guitar, after a bit of fiddling around now and again. But it wasn't Stevie that got me into blues. Thanks for that go to Jimmy Page. A couple of years after getting into Led Zep, I wondered what Page had been doing before, which led me to The Yardbirds, which led to Jeff Beck and Eric Clapton, which led to Freddie King, Muddy Waters, Elmore James...well, you get the picture.

I don't think I'd go to see Joe live - not at anything other than a small venue anyway. All the vids I've seen of his big shows just seem too polished; not what blues is about for me. It should be rough around the edges, because it's about the human condition, which is never perfection.
Clearly a superb guitarist though, and I always enjoy his studio work.
